After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, the New York Knicks are undergoing a reshuffle under new head coach Mike Brown. In that context, several names have come up as possible targets — including NBA veterans Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul.
Regarding the 40-year-old point guard, reporter Sam Amico recently wrote: “New York could potentially have an interest in veteran point guard Chris Paul.” However, he later clarified: “One source told Hoops Wire that the Knicks adding Paul is a ‘long, long shot,’ but added it couldn’t be ruled out entirely.”
Paul is a free agent after completing the 2024-25 season with the San Antonio Spurs. He played all 82 games there, a testament to his durability and physical condition despite his age. During the season, he averaged 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds.
Among Paul’s potential destinations, the most likely appear to be the Los Angeles Clippers and the Phoenix Suns — two teams he’s previously played for. That preference, ahead of other possible options like the Milwaukee Bucks, seems to be driven largely by personal considerations.

Reports suggest Paul’s top priority is staying close to his family in California, something he didn’t have while playing in San Antonio. Another key condition appears to be starting, as he looks to make the most of what could be his final NBA season.
If those preferences remain, they could hurt the Knicks’ chances. Geography is the most obvious obstacle. And in terms of Paul’s potential role on Mike Brown’s roster, it’s hard to envision him starting with Jalen Brunson firmly entrenched as the lead guard.
Another player mentioned as a possible Knicks target is Russell Westbrook. Like Chris Paul, he is currently a free agent after a solid season with the Denver Nuggets. Despite Westbrook’s strong showing in 2024-25, his star status, and the fact that he is a former NBA MVP, the 36-year-old guard appears to be having difficulty locking in his next move.
The Sacramento Kings initially seemed most interested in signing him, but that cooled after they brought in Dennis Schroder. Other potential options like the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers don’t seem likely either.
In New York’s case, the situation appears similar. “Sources described the Knicks’ interest in Westbrook as incredibly minimal,” reported Sam Amico for Hoops Wire, signaling that the 2017 NBA MVP is not a current priority for the franchise.
As they look for a backup point guard behind Brunson, the Knicks reportedly are in advanced talks with Ben Simmons. “They have continued to touch base with Ben Simmons during the free agency period,” reported SNY’s Ian Begley.
