The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ aspirations of making a strong run in the upcoming NFL season align with the message coming from their players as preparations ramp up. Quarterback Baker Mayfield has emerged as the leading voice of the team and recently revealed the main goal for Todd Bowles’ squad moving forward.
The NFC South is shaping up to be one of the most evenly matched divisions, with plenty of roster movement, so the Bucs will need to pay close attention to every detail if they want to gain an advantage over their rivals. Mayfield emphasized the strategies that need improvement in order to achieve big results.
As the first moves begin to take shape across the league, the talented quarterback took some time to speak with the media at the Buccaneers‘ facilities in Tampa Bay. He stated what the team’s main objective will be starting from Week 1.
“We’re trying to get some more explosive [plays] in,” the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, via the team’s official transcript. “Obviously, when you look at the stats — I’m not a big stats guy — but we weren’t as much down-the-field explosive. We were creating a lot of open, in the middle, and guys getting some YAC.”

Mayfield’s connection with his offense
Some new faces, and a few familiar ones. Baker Mayfield has several options at his disposal on offense—it’s now a matter of building strong chemistry with them to maximize their potential starting in Week 1.
“[We’re] working on that, being able to connect on the chemistry we’re trying to build right now and just the timing of some of these routes — where the landmarks are and understanding that if it’s two-high [safety coverage], one-high [safety coverage], where we’re trying to throw the ball,” he said.
“This is the time of year we’re working on it. Obviously, you would love to have more down-the-field shots, but any completion is a good one.”
