Brock Purdy has been the face of the San Francisco 49ers in recent years, despite many questioning his talent since entering the NFL. Still, with the Bay Area team eyeing a return to the Super Bowl, Kyle Shanahan’s quarterback room is looking stronger than ever.
Mac Jones arrived in the NFC West this past offseason following a stint with the Jaguars, initially expected to back up Mr. Irrelevant. However, many believe he has what it takes to lead this team as the starter — including offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak.
During a recent interview with the media, the 49ers’ offensive coordinator revealed the main reasons behind the franchise’s decision to bring him in this season, placing particular emphasis on the former Patriots quarterback’s arm talent.
“… as a rookie, what he did in the NFL was very impressive. Mac’s a really good thrower. He stands in the pocket, he’s a strong guy and he’s really smart,” Kubiak said via Grant Cohn of SI.com.

“And so he’s got a lot of traits that we like for a starting quarterback. And his career has kind of gone up and down a little bit the past couple years, but we saw the same things in Jacksonville that we loved about him as a college prospect, and that really excites us. And he’s doing a great job. And I think Mac’s capable of being a starter in this league. And so he’s going to help us if he needs to.”

The importance of returning to the spotlight for the 49ers
While Brock Purdy is well aware that Mac Jones represents a high-quality backup, his starting job is not currently at risk—unless there’s a significant drop in his performance. That’s why the quarterback now faces the tough challenge of leading his team back to the NFL’s biggest stage.
With key weapons like George Kittle locked in, head coach Shanahan knows he has more than enough talent to improve on last season’s disappointing campaign. As a result, the Bay Area is still dreaming of joining the ranks of teams with serious championship aspirations.
It will be a matter of tightening the necessary screws to show their intentions starting from Week 1, leaving no room for doubt about the main objectives of this historic franchise in the league.
