The Jacksonville Jaguars were, in some ways, fortunate in the last NFL Draft, which gave them the opportunity to land Travis Hunter — one of college football’s standout stars from last season. Aware of the former Colorado Buffaloes’ versatility, HC Liam Coen is still in the process of determining where Hunter will see the most playing time on the field.
During the team’s most intense workout on Friday, Coen gave Hunter multiple reps at both wide receiver and cornerback — a move that ultimately provided the head coach with some important insights.
Following the conclusion of the mock game — one of the most demanding tests so far in this stage of preparation — the former Buccaneers offensive coordinator spoke to the media and addressed the situation of a player he hopes will become a key offensive weapon for Trevor Lawrence.
“I thought it was great,” Coen said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. “We got him the work that we wanted to get with him on offense early on and then able to get him on defense and get him enough reps. That was what we were hoping to do tonight in terms of just get him on both sides of the ball, quality work.

“I know he [didn’t] get much [action at cornerback] because the D-line was getting a good rush, so it was a little hard to see. I thought when he had the ball in his hands and he operated, he operated at a high level.”

What position will Travis Hunter play?
Travis Hunter’s unique ability to play both sides of the ball has created a fascinating challenge for the Jacksonville Jaguars. While he excelled as a two-way player in college, the NFL demands a higher level of specialization. HC Liam Coen has not committed to one position for Hunter, instead indicating that the team will take a flexible approach to his role.
The decision of where to play Hunter will likely evolve throughout the season. Coen’s strategy seems to be centered on leveraging Hunter’s talents wherever they are most needed, potentially using him as a high-impact player in specific packages on both sides of the ball. This approach allows the Jaguars to maximize Hunter’s rare skill set without pigeonholing him into one position, making him a true “unicorn” on the field.
Early challenges for the Jaguars
To make a real statement in the AFC South, it’s crucial for Lawrence and company to start the upcoming NFL season on the right foot. These are the first five challenges they’ll have to overcome if they hope to join the pack of legitimate title contenders:
- vs Carolina Panthers, September 7th
- @ Cincinnati Bengals, September 14th
- vs Houston Texans, September 21st
- @ San Francisco 49ers, September 28th
- vs Kansas City Chiefs, October 6th
