Many inside the Jacksonville Jaguars facility believe this could finally be the breakout season for Trevor Lawrence and his teammates. The arrival of Liam Coen as the new head coach has brought a sense of renewal, and his partnership with the quarterback could yield big results for this team.

Returning to prominence is imperative for this team, which struggled to gain traction in its division last NFL season under Doug Pederson, hampered by key injuries that severely limited its potential.

Duval has reason to be excited after Lawrence’s performance in the first mock game — something head coach Coen himself pointed out in his remarks to the media following the session.

I thought he was making sharp, fast decisions. The ball was getting driven constantly. I thought it was getting driven. He missed a few for sure. He missed Travis [WR/DB Travis Hunter] down on the goal line behind, when Ventrell [LB Ventrell Miller] made a great play, but that ball’s got to be out in front,” the HC stated.

“The interception’s a tough one. Parker took a little long on the route. We had an out in a corner combination down here. The guy that had the out covered fell off. He lobbed it in the back of the end zone. Just move on, progress, or throw it in the back of the end zone but I just thought he made good sharp decisions. He drove the ball. I thought he ran the show well. I thought it was a good night for him.

Coen’s excitement about the running game

Liam Coen’s arrival as the new head coach of the Jaguars also brought fresh faces to the staff — including offensive coordinator Grant Udinsky. During the early training camp sessions and also during the mock game seen as a first real test, several new elements were already visible on the field.

“Then tonight, to see the pass game open up a little bit more and guys get out in space and protect fairly well, so that was definitely something that I was pleased with seeing because it really, not to say that it hasn’t shown up, it’s just hard sometimes in those controlled settings to always, when scripted, be able to get those off,” Coen said.

Trevor Lawrence is expected to lean on a variety of offensive snaps featuring Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby — two of the most powerful running backs on the roster.
