Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs are preparing to start a new chapter without Mitch Marner. After the surprising trade, the Canadian team’s general manager, Brad Treliving, explained part of what happened during the process.
“He’s going to go down as one of the great Leafs. Right? The statistics prove it. Ultimately, the player has a choice. I don’t think it’s proper to get into personal discussions that I have with players, but, we certainly approached Mitch to engage him on a contract. Mitch and his representative wanted to wait until the year was done. As it became clear to us that the potential may not be there, we tried to look at alternatives. As his right and as it was negotiated, Mitch had a full no-move clause. So, he controlled the process. That’s how we got here.”
Now, Marner will look to win the Stanley Cup with a contender like the Knights, and he has already stated that his new team has everything it takes to achieve it. In fact, that statement left a bittersweet feeling in Toronto, where the trophy has not been won since 1967.
Where did Mitch Marner go?
Mitch Marner will go to the Las Vegas Golden Knights after a shocking sign-and-trade deal with the Maple Leafs. In that operation, Toronto received Nicolas Roy in return.
The whole situation was full of uncertainty. Before the trade, Marner had signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Leafs, but, in something that caused a lot of controversy, he later sought a way out with his agent.
