Mitch Marner is a name that will dominate headlines this offseason, especially regarding the current situation of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The offensive partner of star Auston Matthews appears to be halfway out of the franchise heading into the 2025–26 NHL season.

Marner is in the final year of his six-year, $65.4 million contract with Toronto, which includes a no-movement clause. According to the Maple Leafs’ general manager Brad Treliving, re-signing him is not a priority during this rebuilding phase. All signs point to the organization planning its future around Matthews.

At the same time, Marner has reportedly shown signs of wanting a change of scenery after expressing dissatisfaction a few months ago when he was offered in a trade package for star forward Mikko Rantanen of the Dallas Stars. In this context, a new franchise has emerged to negotiate with Toronto.

Which team could be Marner’s next destination?

The NHL franchise that could land Mitch Marner is the Vegas Golden Knights, who are reportedly interested in acquiring the Maple Leafs’ current star, according to The Hockey News. Talks between both teams are said to be serious, though no agreement has been reached yet.

Marner’s move to the Golden Knights wouldn’t be easy, as he carries a $10.9 million cap hit. This high cost would require special maneuvers to free up space, especially considering the current salary cap limitations of the Pacific Division franchise.

Marner would have special conditions

According to recent reports, Marner not only wants to be a central star at his next destination, but he has also set a specific condition. The 27-year-old reportedly wants to avoid signing with a Canadian franchise, as he’s seeking a complete change of environment. Along those lines, the Los Angeles Kings had also shown interest in him.
