The celebrations following their NHL championship are now in the rearview mirror, and the Florida Panthers are fully focused on what’s ahead. With Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, and Aaron Ekblad all locked in, the spotlight now shifts to the players who may not return for the upcoming season.
Despite being a key piece in Paul Maurice’s system, veteran defenseman Nate Schmidt appears to be on his way out of the franchise. The former Jets blueliner could be wearing a different uniform come next season.
The news was reported by NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, who shared details on X (formerly Twitter) regarding this major decision the Panthers are expected to make.
“The Cup champs hope to get Tomas Nosek re-signed today, but Nate Schmidt is headed to market. Had a solid playoffs for Florida,” the insider reported via @PierreVLeBrun.

Nate Schmidt #88 of the Florida Panthers celebrates with the Stanley Cup after defeating the Edmonton Oilers in Game Six of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final at Amerant Bank Arena on June 17, 2025 in Sunrise, Florida.
The good news for the reigning champions is that, according to LeBrun, they re-signed Tomas Nosek with a one year, $775k deal.

Keeping the core intact for what’s ahead
The Florida Panthers‘ clear strategy for sustained success in the NHL is deeply rooted in maintaining their championship core. The recent re-signing of pivotal forward Brad Marchand is a testament to this, as his veteran leadership, clutch scoring, and tenacious play were instrumental in their recent Stanley Cup victory.
Equally crucial to their long-term vision is the retention of key players like Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad. Bennett brings a formidable physical presence, scoring touch, and invaluable two-way game that consistently challenges opponents and elevates the team’s intensity in high-stakes situations.
Meanwhile, Ekblad, a cornerstone on the blue line, offers a rare combination of defensive prowess, offensive contributions, and significant ice time against top lines, providing the necessary stability and puck movement to control games.
By securing these integral pieces, the Panthers are clearly signaling their ambition to establish a dynasty and pursue another NHL title. The strong chemistry, shared experience, and exceptional talent within this core group of Marchand, Bennett, and Ekblad are foundational elements that will allow the Panthers to continue competing at the highest level and aim for back-to-back, or even multiple, Stanley Cup championships.
