Sam Bennett has a contract that expires at the end of the NHL season and is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2025. However, the Florida Panthers have received a significant update regarding the situation of their key forward.

It’s clear that the Panthers currently have more pressing concerns, as they are in the midst of the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers—a series tied 2-2 in which Bennett has been a major figure.

Meanwhile, the offseason is approaching, and key decisions await Florida, including the potential extension of Bennett, especially after Brad Marchand’s departure seems all but confirmed. The Panthers want to keep its star forward.

The challenges in Bennett’s case

While both sides have made it clear they want the deal to happen, there are a few obstacles delaying an immediate extension. The Panthers are dealing with a tight salary cap, which could make it difficult to offer Bennett the market-level salary that other teams might be willing to pay if he enters free agency.
