Alex Ovechkin broke an important record in the NHL held by Wayne Gretzky, and the reactions came swiftly, including words from Sidney Crosby, player for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Alex Ovechkin achieved what no one thought was possible: breaking the record for most goals scored in the NHL, a record previously held by Wayne Gretzky. The reactions came swiftly after this milestone, and one of the first to speak out was Sidney Crosby, one of the stars of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In a message posted through the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Penguins, one of the league’s top stars and perhaps one of Ovechkin’s fiercest rivals, congratulated the Capitals’ leader on his achievement.

“It’s been an honor to compete against you all these years,” Sidney Crosby stated via @penguins. It’s worth telling that Ovechkin scored his 895th goal since joining the league, against the New York Islanders. With this, he became the all-time leading goal scorer in the history of the sport.

Both Ovechkin and Crosby have become, in recent years, some of the greatest figures in the NHL, perhaps even legends in their respective teams. However, the Penguins star knows that beyond being rivals, they are colleagues, and he had no hesitation in congratulating him for achieving what was once thought impossible.

“What a day,” Ovechkin said during his speech. “It’s a team sport, and without my boys, the whole organization, the fans and coaches, I would never stand there, and obviously I would never pass ‘The Great One’. Thank you very much. We did it boys, we did it.”

“Thank you, Ilya Sorokin for letting me score 895, I love you brother,” the Capitals star told fellow Russian, Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin.
