The Edmonton Oilers rallied from behind to secure a crucial Game 4 win over the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs First Round. Edmonton hasn’t shown its best version yet, but has somehow managed to even the series at two games a piece, heading back to the City of Angels with a big wave of momentum. Ahead of Game 5, captain <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-mcdavid">Connor McDavid</a> voiced a stern message for the Kings and the rest of the NHL to listen to.



The Kings and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/edmonton-oilers">Oilers</a> have split their first round playoff series so far, with both teams prevailing on home ice. However, as the matchup shifts to Los Angeles, the Oilers will be looking to build off their recent wins and deliver a statement triumph at Crypto.com Arena, where they haven’t won since April 28, 2024 during the NHL postseason.



While the Oilers’ record in Los Angeles has been deflating, Connor McDavid remains a constant headache for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-kings">Kings</a>. Despite appearing in control for much of the series, the Kings find themselves tied. That’s the advantage of having both McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in the lineup — they can tilt the ice with a single swoosh of the magic wand.



Both stars in Edmonton register 9 points through four games in the series, Evan Bouchard tallies 7, and the next in line is Corey Perry with 3. These numbers show the Kings are essentially struggling to contain the Oilers’ three-headed monster, which has put the team on their back and kept them alive. The Kings’ production is more balanced and evenly distributed through the lineup, yet it hasn’t translated in the series scoreboard.

After rallying from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Kings 4-3 in overtime in Game 4, Connor McDavid issued a blunt warning to Los Angeles and the rest of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> about underestimating the Oilers.

“I’m sure there’s lots of people that are doubting us still, but we like it that way,” McDavid confidently said postgame, per NHL.com. “Lots of people are counting us out, but we’re fighting to beat a good team. They’re a good team, they really are, and we’re fighting.”

“We have a strong belief in here, a strong belief that we’re never out,” McDavid added. “People are doubting us. We’re putting ourselves in bad spots, but we’re working, we’re digging our way out and trying to find ways to win games and obviously, we found a way to tonight. <h2>Goalie change paid off</h2>



After subpar performances from Stuart Skinner in Games 1 and 2, Kris Knoblauch made a bold lineup change, subbing in Calvin Pickard on goal. Pickard came in in Skinner’s aid after allowing 5 goals in 28 shots during the crushing 6-2 loss.

The news of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan">Mike Sullivan</a>‘s exit from the Pittsburgh Penguins have completely shocked the NHL coaching carousel, as a household name is now available for every franchise in need of an established head coach. It didn’t take long for Sullivan to draw interest from two important organizations, which feel just one winning head coach away from becoming contenders. According to reports, it’s looking like a two-horse race for the two-time Stanley Cup champion.



Sullivan proved his worth immediately after being named head coach in Pittsburgh midway through the 2015-16 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season. Guiding the Pens to their fourth Stanley Cup in his first season on the job, Sullivan proved it wasn’t a case of beginner’s luck, securing the back-to-back championship the next season.



Of course, it hasn’t gone smoothly since for Sullivan and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/pittsburgh-penguins">Penguins</a>, as the franchise hasn’t won a playoff series in the last seven seasons, missing the postseason entirely in their last three campaigns. Despite this deflating precedent, Sullivan is still widely-acclaimed throughout the NHL, and him becoming available after nearly a decade shocked the market.



There are currently seven teams without a head coach named for the 2025-26 season: the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers" rel="sponsored nofollow">New York Rangers</a>, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, Seattle Kraken, and, of course, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rangers have had their eye on Sullivan for a long time, having pursued him in past offseasons, but the former Penguins coach was never made available, forcing New York to explore other options.



It feels the stars have finally alligned for the Broadway Blueshirts and Sullivan, the former are actively seeking a proven head coach who can guide them to their first <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stanley-cup">Stanley Cup</a> since 1994, while Sullivan is looking for a job and the Rangers boast, arguably, the most exciting roster out of every franchise with an opening behind the bench.



However, last season left the Rangers overflowing with drama, resulting in a fragile locker room in need of a new captain and strong leadership to guide them back to Lord Stanley. Whether Sullivan is hesitant to step into New York’s concrete jungle — with its constant honking, bright lights, and nonstop chaos — remains to be seen.

<h2>Back to Beantown?</h2>



The Bruins, on the other hand, would offer Sullivan a return to where his journey started. Sullivan was first named head coach for the Providence Bruins in the AHL, before being promoted to the NHL in 2003.

Sullivan’s time with the Bruins was a true tale of two halves. During his first year during the 2003-04 campaingn, he led the team to a first place finish in the Northeast Division, but was shockingly knocked out in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The NHL lockout ensued, and Sullivan’s Bruins were unable to repeat their success during the 2005-06 season, after which the head coach was fired.



Next season will be the 20th year anniversary since, though. Sullivan has proved his worth now, and the Bruins seem heavily interested in him to succeed Jim Montgomery and interim coach Joe Sacco.

<h2>An alternative to coaching carousel</h2>



Although it sounds less appealing for fans, the Penguins might down a different route: promoting Kirk MacDonald, the AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head coach, to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> head coach job.



It would be fitting, as Sullivan was promoted by the organization from his head coach position in the AHL to succeed Mike Johnston behind the bench for the NHL Penguins in December 2015. He’d go on to hoist the Stanley Cup, becoming the sixth coach in league history to accomplish such feat after being hired mid-season.

While the Penguins shouldn’t rush their head coaching decision, they cannot waste much time, either. Plus, the organization must show Crosby and the rest of the team they know what they’re doing. Ahead of Brandon Hagel’s return to the lineup for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs First Round against the Florida Panthers, a key Tampa Bay Lightning player issued a strong warning to Brad Marchand, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/matthew-tkachuk">Matthew Tkachuk</a>, and the rest of the Panthers. The Lightning and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Panthers</a> are meeting in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stanley-cup">Stanley Cup Playoffs</a> for the fourth time in five seasons, with Tampa Bay holding a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head series so far. The first-round clash of the 2024-25 NHL season has lived up to the hype, with Matthew Tkachuk providing fireworks night after night since returning from long-term injured reserve.



The Panthers have built a reputation for their gritty style of play, which has brought them plenty of success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the Lightning have no intention of backing down. Ahead of Game 4, Anthony Cirelli issued a warning to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brad-marchand">Brad Marchand</a> and Matthew Tkachuk, who will be put to the test as Tampa Bay looks to steal another win on the road.

“He’s going to be back and he’s going to be buzzing in this next one,” Cirelli stated, per NHL.com. “We went out there and played for him [in Game 3]. He’s one of us; he’s our family in here. He wasn’t able to go and we just talked about, just got to step up and take it game at a time and go out there and win that one for him.“

<h2>Head on a swivel</h2>



Hagel was assessed a one-game suspension by the NHL Player Safety Department after laying a vicious hit on a possession-less Aleksander Barkov during Game 2 back in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tampa-bay-lightning">Tampa</a>. 



There wasn’t many arguments to be held in Hagel’s defense, however, controversy arose after Tkachuk landed a similar hit on Jake Guentzel during Game 3, yet the NHL opted for no further discipline. Tkachuk was handed a five-minute major for interference, but he won’t miss out on the action during Game 4.



The Lightning took exception to Tkachuk’s actions, leading to chaos breaking loose on the ice. However, it feels like the spark has only just been lit, with even more fireworks expected when the two Florida-based franchises clash again on April 28.



“I think he’s going to have a great game,” forward Zemgus Girgensons said about Hagel. “I think him sitting out a game will build up his emotions. I think he’s going to be flying tomorrow.”

<h2>Hagel vs Tkachuk: Chapter II</h2>



Neither Hagel nor Tkachuk are the type to back down from conflict; if anything, they’ll likely lead the charge. The two were at the center of a viral clash during the 4 Nations tournament when Team USA and Canada faced off in their Round Robin matchup, and it’s shaping up to be the next chapter in what’s quickly becoming an instant-classic rivalry.



However, both sides have plenty of players who aren’t afraid to drop the mitts. The Panthers boast a trio of agitators in Matthew Tkachuk, Brad Marchand, and Sam Bennett — players who would each be considered the biggest instigator on most NHL teams, but in Florida, they come together to form a three-headed Tasmanian devil.

After more than two years on suspension, Joel Quenneville is closing in on a return to coaching in the NHL. The three-time Stanley Cup-winning head coach, previously with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Chicago Blackhawks</a>, is conducting interviews with several franchises, and a surprising frontrunner has emerged.



The Blackhawks are one of the handful of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> franchises in an active search for their next head coach. After David Carle stepped down from the race for the Hawks’ vacant job, the team in Chicago is still acephalous when it comes to their bench.



Quenneville, who hoisted three Stanley Cups during his ten-year stay in Windy City, could emerge as a strong candidate to succeed interim coach Anders Sorensen. However, there are some roadblocks impeding a smooth return.



On the one hand, fans and the organization might not be on board with Coach Q’s return, due to the allegations that have sidelined him from the NHL from 2021 until July 2024, when he was officially allowed to seek employment in the league.

On the other hand, the Blackhawks may be looking for a different coaching style, one that’s more in line with their young, up-and-coming roster. However, another rebuilding team might be trending toward signing Quenneville.

According to reports from insiders Frank Seravalli and John Buccigross, Quenneville interviewed with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/anaheim-ducks">Anaheim Ducks</a> for the head coaching job, and is considered a strong candidate. Though it’s still early in the process, and the Ducks will conduct interviews with other candidates. 



<h2>Former teammate</h2>



As noted by Seravalli, there is a strong link between the Ducks and Quenneville, which could signal the 66-year-old coach is trending towards the franchise in Anaheim. Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek and Quenneville were teammates with the Hartford Whalers during the 1989-90 season.



<h2>Carle is not headed to Chicago</h2>



Perhaps the biggest question mark in the NHL’s coaching market, surrounds David Carle, the University of Denver and Team USA U-20 head coach, who is in consideration by every franchise without an official head coach.



The Blackhawks heavily pursued Carle, but he has shut that door and is staying in Denver, at least for now, unless an offer from a different franchise comes his way.

Along with the Blackhawks and Ducks, the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Seattle Kraken are also actively searching for a new head coach for the 2025-26 season. It’s unclear whether Carle’s decision reflects a desire to stay in the NCAA, or if it was solely a lack of interest in joining Chicago.
