It takes two to tango, and throughout their NHL careers, Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby have learned that time and again. Now, with the Pittsburgh Penguins captain’s future under much speculation, the Washington Capitals‘ forward voiced a straightforward comment on the upcoming season.
The Penguins aren’t putting much thought into the buzz surrounding Crosby, but almost every NHL team is keeping an eye open. Just in case, no franchise would want to miss on the chance to acquire the league’s active points leader.
While Crosby might eye an exit from Pittsburgh, Ovechkin isn’t linked to any move around the NHL. Instead, the buzz around Ovi is focused on a potential retirement from the league. Still, Ovechkin is focused in chasing another Stanley Cup with Washington, especially after setting the all-time goals record.
Setting the record straight
On that note, recent statements from Ovechkin’s wife, Anastasia Shubskaya, might have hinted at the NHL’s all-time leading goalscorer’s next step in his career. However, Ovechkin firmly dismissed the noise.

Alex Ovechkin #8 of the Washington Capitals looks on during the first period in Game Three of the Second Round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Carolina Hurricanes.
“[My wife said in an interview] maybe we will come and play in Russia, but anything can happen,” Ovechkin told Russian media Sport-Express. “This is pure nonsense that [the media] flipped things and put Nastya in that position.”

What if…
While no report has linked Ovechkin to any other NHL team, it’s still early to tell what’s next in Ovechkin’s career. The 39-year-old forward made sure to leave the door open for anything and everything to occur. “Anything can happen,” Ovechkin admitted.
Contract talk
The Capitals‘ icon is entering his 21st NHL season, under the final campaign of his five-year, $47.5M deal. Under this contract, Ovi will earn a $9M salary, while carrying an annual cap hit of $9.5M.

Moreover, Ovechkin’s deal includes a modified no-movement clause with a 10-team no-trade list. Ahead of what could be his last season, the goal machine will pursue the 900 goal mark. He will do so while adding on to his millionaire net worth.
