Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, has always been a respected voice in the world of soccer. Recently, the Argentine icon shared high praise for a young talent who he believes is already among the best in the world, drawing parallels to his own career beginnings.

The player in question? Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. “He’s one of the best in the world,” Messi declared unequivocally. While many have already recognized Yamal’s immense potential, hearing such a statement from a man who has dominated the sport for two decades carries unparalleled weight.

In an interview with Simplemente Fútbol, Messi expressed admiration for the young Spanish star’s accomplishments. “It’s incredible what he’s showing, what he’s doing, and what he’s already achieved. He’s a European champion with Spain,” Messi said, highlighting Yamal’s rapid ascent in soccer.

Messi’s praise didn’t stop there. The Argentine legend emphasized Yamal’s age as a critical factor in his potential. “He’s only 17! He’s still in a growth phase, and I think he’ll continue to improve and add more to his game,” Messi observed.

Drawing from his own experience, Messi noted similarities between Yamal’s early career trajectory and his own. “Like how I started, he’s also playing on the right side. Maybe in a few years, he’ll be playing differently, but there’s no doubt he has extraordinary skills. Today, he’s already one of the best in the world,” Messi added.

For fans, it’s impossible not to compare the young Spanish winger’s rise to the early days of the long-haired Argentine prodigy who debuted with Barcelona two decades ago. Yamal’s dribbling, pace, passing, and precision resemble a young Messi—traits that transcend the shared Barcelona jersey.

Not Messi’s first praise for Yamal

This isn’t the first time Messi has spoken highly of Yamal, who currently plays for Barcelona. When Yamal, just 17, was awarded the Golden Boy award for the best young player in the world, Messi lauded his achievements. “It’s not just about talent—it’s the result of hard work and sacrifice,” Messi had said.

Yamal himself has weighed in on comparisons with the Barcelona legend. “I like that they compare me to the greatest player in the history of soccer, but I want to be myself,” Yamal told Antena 3. “Reaching Messi’s level is impossible,” he added.

The connection between Messi and Yamal goes beyond the field. Fans often recall a famous photo of Messi and Yamal when the latter was just a baby and Messi was starting his career. “Man, he passed along some of his powers to me,” Yamal joked in an interview with Antena 3.

Much like Messi, Yamal has expressed his devotion to Barcelona, saying he wants to be a “legend” for the Spanish club and “never leave.” Having debuted for Barcelona in 2023, the young star’s journey is just beginning, but with Messi’s endorsement, his future seems limitless.
