“We understand the people’s frustration, especially in wanting to see these players, but it is our job as the coaching staff to make these decisions that are uncomfortable. We understand what these players provoke in the league and other markets, but we have to take these measures that are sometimes unpleasant for people. But they are beneficial for the players,” Martino stated. 



“We can’t announce with 20 days’ notice what our movements will be. We analyzed the situation on Thursday because we have three games in a week, but sometimes unfortunate things happen that don’t allow for players to participate in a certain match.”

In fact, the Herons’ manager recently admitted he could try Leo at a different position. Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday’s game against the New York Red Bulls, Martino said he’s considering playing <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lionel-messi">Messi</a> as a striker.



“We’ve talked about [Messi playing as a No. 9] and I think recuperating Leo in those points of the pitch is a great point for us,” Martino said, via ESPN. “He doesn’t exhaust himself coming and going, not that he can’t do it, he can move anywhere he wants on the pitch, but we shouldn’t deprive ourselves from the moment of his participation in the final moments of the play.“



Messi has played as a right winger for most of his career, but the last few years saw him operate more as an attacking midfielder. To say Tata Martino does not have a talented side is simply not looking at the truth, no MLS team has the talent on display like Inter Miami. The league has allowed Jorge Mas’ team to spend, supposedly within MLS salary cap space.

Questions have surfaced as to why Tata Martino has not been able to get the most out of other players who on paper have a high level in their pedigree.



<h2>Formations and style of play</h2>



The best of Tata Martino’s side has usually come when playing in a 4-3-3 formation, with and without Messi. When Martino has turned to a 3-5-2 flat formation, the worst of his team has come out.

Usually through amateurish defensive mishaps, the team has enormous problems playing out of the back, yet Martino insists on that, the end result have been give-a-ways, poor back passes, and a defensive shape that is often overwhelmed by an opponent’s pressing.

Against Monterrey, Martino tried to send a message to all of MLS by not using one single substitute. Instead, the coach opted to keep the aging legs of all his stars to go a full 90 when the game was virtually unwinnable early in the second half.



In a post-game conference Martino made a note of the difference of depth on each side, “I maintain that the teams with the best squads in Mexican football have reached this stage. As long as the MLS doesn’t loosen its rules to allow for better squads and easier replacement of absences and injuries, there will be an advantage.”



If Martino was Ben Olsen, or most of the teams in MLS in general, his response would hold a lot of weight, the problem is that Inter Miami has four world class players on their roster, that few in the region have, a backline that was handpicked by Martino, and one of South America’s best youth prospects in his starting XI, and the team didn’t look much better.



<h2>Past his prime coach</h2>



Tata Martino is at Inter Miami because of his success with Atlanta United and a healthy relationship with Lionel Messi. A lot has happened since the days of Atlanta United, Martino managed Mexico to two straight cup final defeats against the USMNT, one of which was a B squad in the Gold Cup final.

Then Martino’s Mexican side at the World Cup was a massive disappointment, true it was not the best generation of Mexican players, but Martino has the stain of being the first Mexican national team manager to not get out of the first round of the FIFA World Cup when Mexico returned to the big stage in 1994.





 Martino inherited a poorly put together side at Inter Miami, and has done his best to reconstruct it, the difference has been Inter Miami has the resources to truly field a competitive team. Under Martino’s watch nearly 10 players have come in, six of them on either high salaries or huge transfer fees, four of them are some of the biggest names in the sport in the last decade, at one point you can’t keep looking at the system, you have to start looking at the coach.

“Diego Gómez has the Copa América and the Olympic Games. We know we have to give him up for the Copa, but not for the Games. We’ve communicated; I have many friends there (Martino was the coach of the Paraguayan national team between 2007 and 2011) and I told them to choose just one,” Martino said. “I am pro-national team, but in this case, there are two competitions happening simultaneously, which means a player will be out for more than two months. So they will inform me which tournament they want him for.”

According to Palomo, Al Nassr wants to move quickly and the former Mexico boss could be their man.

Tata Martino is coming off of head coaching the Mexican national team to poor results, despite a 42-12-12 record the Argentine was criticized for never finding a team that was fluid in attack. Martino also lost two continental titles to the United States in less than a year and failed to get out of the group stage in the 2022 World Cup.
Martin did win a Gold Cup in 2019 but the playing field in Concacaf was incredibly weaker, the USMNT were just coming off of failing to get to the 2018 World Cup and Costa Rica and Canada were also in rebuild mode.

Martino’s last club experience was Atlanta United in MLS, in his two years in charge the club not only played their first match ever, but the Argentine also led the team to the MLS Cup in 2018. Al Nassr is also interested in fellow Argentine Marcelo Gallardo and a reported $100 million move for José Mourinho.

Martino’s time in ElTri can best be summed up as, divisive. His time as manager was heavily questioned by greats like Hugo Sanchez and would hit a brick wall when injuries to his key players would result in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/soccer/qatar-2022-players-who-would-play-the-world-cup-for-mexico-instead-of-chicharito-and-marcelo-flores-20220721-0034.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poor personal decisions</a>.
Still, Martino has made an assessment about the Mexican player and things he saw while he was coaching ElTri. Martino spoke to the Olfato de Gol podcast and did not hold back.

“How is it that the Mexican transfer market has players internally worth eight, ten or 12 million dollars and those same players have no outlet abroad?” Martino asked. “The value here is one and abroad it practically doesn’t exist.” Martino questioned the overvalued internal market of the Mexican player and how that limits the chance of said players moving to Europe, which the former coach saw as key to push the program further.
Martino also pointed out that sometimes young players are sold too quickly when they haven’t had time to truly establish themselves, “Many times there’s talk of players that at a young age or without much experience in the first division go to European soccer, but rarely do the alarms go off when these players, two or three years [later], are back in the Mexican market,” said Martino.

When it comes to the USMNT and Major League Soccer, Martino was the coach of Atlanta United prior to becoming Mexican national coach, the Argentine sees a path forward, much better than that of Liga MX and Mexico.
“I notice a desire to have a very competitive league, to improve it year after year, and then what I also notice is the fact that American soccer players are exported to Europe, it’s something that’s part of the development policy. Undoubtedly that’s good for the [United States men’s] national team,” Martino said. “More and more transfer to Europe and you have them playing in the best teams in the best leagues in Europe.”
