One position Mascherano is focused on strengthening is the goalkeeper spot, and the primary candidate for initial negotiations is Guido Herrera, the standout veteran keeper from Talleres in Argentina. However, securing him will not be easy, as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/inter-miami">Inter Miami</a> face competition from a familiar face: Gerardo “Tata” Martino.



According to reporting by Bolavip, both Inter Miami and Atlanta United have the Talleres goalkeeper on their list for next season. It is expected that both clubs could submit a formal offer to sign him at the start of the transfer window.



The Herons have not yet advanced aggressively with the goalkeeper due to their current playoff run. For the moment, they have only inquired with Herrera’s camp about his status and the possibility of seeking a change of scenery in the upcoming market.

The reason for Inter Miami’s pursuit of Herrera stems from the inconsistent performances of Oscar Ustari and Rocco Rios Novo throughout the season. Following the departure of Drake Callender, Mascherano rotated between the two Argentine keepers, but neither has provided the necessary stability to the team.

“Atlanta United today announced it has named Gerardo “Tata” Martino as the club’s head coach and signed the Argentine to a contract through the 2027 MLS season,” Atlanta United announced in an <a href="https://www.atlutd.com/news/atlanta-united-names-gerardo-tata-martino-as-head-coach-november-2025">official statement</a>.



This will mark Martino’s second tenure as head coach of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/atlanta-united">Atlanta United</a>, having been the franchise’s inaugural manager. During that time, the Argentine coach directed 68 matches, led the clubs to their first playoff appearance, and captured the MLS Cup in 2018, securing the earliest championship for an expansion team since 1998.

“He is not training with the group. Yes, he is already out on the field and working with the physical trainers. He is evolving well. It was expected that he would not be with Argentina because he is not yet in condition to play. There is no estimated time. We have to start to see how he feels as he adds training on the field,” Tata Martino explained to the press.



<h2>When will Messi see action again?</h2>



The question everyone is asking is when we will be able to see Messi dazzle on the pitch again in an Inter Miami shirt. Tata Martino has assured that the Argentine star will be fit to play before the end of the season, but he has not provided a more specific date.

Diego Rossi was the Crew’s hero with two goals on the evening, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/gerardo-martino" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tata Martino</a>’s side was out-possessed and out-shot by the champions. Now eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup and the Leagues Cup, and being one of many clubs that did not play in the US Open Cup, it’s now MLS Cup or bust for Inter Miami.



In a season that has seen Lionel Messi miss more games than he has played, and despite being first overall in MLS, reporters began to question what’s left for Tata Martino’s side after another big defeat.

Too often, Tata Martino’s demeanor has been that of a manager having fun—coaching Luis Suárez, Messi, and Jordi Alba, and helping position Diego Gomez to possibly be sold to a Premier League side.

Last night, the press corps began asking harsh questions of the Argentine manager. Tata Martino answered a question regarding if it was MLS Cup or bust: “This story of glory or failure, this lack of analysis from each game to see if the game is evolving or not, it’s difficult to respond if you are only focusing on the results.

“It’s clear that (Inter Miami) tries to find a goal at every moment. When one sees how the team competed against Columbus, one cannot be unsatisfied by the performance… The realities are different. We were a different team in Monterrey (at the beginning of the season) than we are now… We will continue to try to compete and win a local title. I can accept that one is viewed by whether you win or lose, but my analysis comes from another place”, Martino ended.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/inter-miami" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Inter Miami</a> has begun their defense of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/leagues-cup" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leagues Cup</a> without their best player and the questionable competition’s biggest star, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lionel-messi" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lionel Messi</a>. In fact, Messi has not played for Inter Miami since June 2nd.



In what is becoming a sad custom in MLS, Messi has only played 12 out of 25 games in 2024, and according to various reports, is expected to return in September, after the Leagues Cup.



Nonetheless, Inter Miami will play the Round of 32 of the Leagues Cup against fellow MLS side Toronto FC. Tata Martino did little to enlighten the press about Messi’s return.



<h2>Tata Martino on Lionel Messi</h2>



The Inter Miami manager stated, “(Messi) keeps working out at the gym and we’re within the deadlines we’re managing (for his return).”



Those deadlines could be post-World Cup qualifying window in September when Argentina plays Chile at home and then Colombia on the road on September 5th and 10th, respectively.
