But Real Madrid might bear the brunt of the repercussions. According to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, Courtois could be suspended for 4 to 12 games for provoking the Atletico fans. If the maximum penalty is applied, he would miss the highly anticipated El Clasico against Barcelona on October 26 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

<h2>What does the rulebook say about Courtois’ potential suspension?</h2>



Courtois could be sidelined for several matches if the disciplinary code of the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) is enforced. The code states: “Provoking animosity from the crowd with such intent, except in cases of serious incidents resulting from it, shall be sanctioned with a suspension of four to twelve matches.”



This means Courtois could miss not only El Clasico but also key LaLiga fixtures against Villarreal, Celta Vigo, and Valencia. If he receives the maximum 12-game ban, he wouldn’t return to LaLiga action until late January.

Fans threw lighters, plastic bottles, and even a plastic bag with unidentified contents.

Players left the pitch for around 20 minutes.



After Éder Militão found the net in the 64th minute, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/thibaut-courtois">Courtois</a> yelled at Atletico Madrid fans, who responded by throwing objects onto the pitch. Among the things that were thrown were lighters and bags filled with garbage, and more. 



Following the incident, referee Busquets Ferrer decided to stop play and sent the players back to the locker rooms. Meanwhile, Atletico coach Diego Simeone went to speak with Courtois, who was visibly upset by the situation. 



“El Cholo” then also spoke with the fans, as it did Koke, trying to calm them down. However, when the players returned to the pitch, the fans booed Courtois. The Belgian played with Atleti from 2011 to 2014.

“He was honest and clear. He knows his body the best, and it’s different to play every three or four days during a tournament,” Tedesco said. “So, when taking all this into consideration, we didn’t think he was ready for the Euros. Of course, we now plan with the players that are able to play.”



The 32-year-old suffered a torn ACL in preseason with Real Madrid, who saw him come back just in time for the final stretch of the campaign. In fact, Courtois even started in the Champions League final win over Borussia Dortmund.

Word on the street is things haven’t been good between Courtois and Tedesco since June 17, 2023, when Romelu Lukaku was named <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/belgium">Belgium</a> captain for the Euro qualifier against Austria (1-1) during Kevin De Bruyne’s absence.



The former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper reportedly wanted to wear the armband that day, and nothing has been the same since then. In fact, that was his last international appearance so far.



Frustrated with Tedesco’s captain choice, Courtois left Belgium’s camp that summer. Speaking to Sporza later that year, shed more light into this controversial situation:



“The fact that I no longer felt appreciation from the federation and coach made something explode within me,” Courtois said in December 2023. “The coach made no effort to find a solution but simply said he would tell the press everything. He wanted to pressure me not to leave and threaten me. That is simply not possible, because it was a private conversation. Then there is a breach of trust between the player and the coach.

“It’s always great to play against them. In the Champions League, for example, I managed to keep Haaland out, only for his team-mates to go and score all the goals. Mbappe and Messi are both fantastic players too, but I think Haaland deserves the award most because he’s won the Champions League, the English Premier League, the FA Cup, and scored a huge amount of goals. So, he deserves it for me, though the other two have scored a lot of goals as well. We’ll just have to see,” Courtois told FIFA.com.



The three stars had already been involved in a battle for a prestigious award a few months ago, with Messi ultimately getting the upper hand in the 2023 Ballon d’Or vote. However, it’s safe to say the 2022 World Cup gave the Argentine star the edge on that occasion.



That triumph was also the reason Messi emerged victorious in the last edition of The Best last year. Since the upcoming award will consider the player’s performances in 2023, Qatar 2022 will no longer be part of the criteria. Only time will tell whether Haaland or Mbappe dethrone Messi this time.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play with lots of great players and I can’t name just the one. Playing against Cristiano [Ronaldo], Messi, Haaland, Mbappe… There are so many great names you could pick, but it’s not up to me to say. I’ve just been fortunate enough to face some of the greatest names in the game, which is special in itself,” Courtois said.
