But as far as his consistency and stuff, I feel this last month has been his best. I feel like if that was the case at any time this year, if Jimmy, he was struggling to throw at his best, I think we would have gone with Trey.”

Justin Fields won’t only try to get the win on Sunday to improve his team to 4-4 this season but also to prove the 49ers wrong in passingon him earlier this year. Shanahan, however, is aware of his talent and has only had words of praise for the Bears’ rookie.
“I can’t sit here and talk too much about another quarterback in that way, but I really liked Justin,” Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday. “I thought that he was extremely tough, very talented. Getting to know him through it, I thought he was a great guy.

“He’s getting thrown in there and playing and he’s having some up and down moments, which is expected. But you have to always be ready for him. If he breaks away, he’s got the size, and he’s got the speed to outrun almost anybody, he throws a great deep ball, has got a big arm, can make every throw and he’s getting better each week.”
The fact thatthe 49ers ended up <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-draft-2021-funniest-memes-and-reactions-20210430-0001.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drafting</a> Lance doesn’t mean Fields hasn’t made an impression on them. The organization simply had other plans and this year’s draft class didn’t make it easy to choose between one QB and another.

Needless to say, that might have been a big mistake, given how inexperienced the first-round rookie is.
But, as it happened throughout the preseason, coach Kyle Shanahan showed no hesitation to give Lance some big snaps in the regular season. In fact, he even scored the first touchdown of the year for them.
And now that Garoppolo is set to miss several weeks with a calf injury, the prophecy could finally be fulfilled. Trey Lance <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/kyle-shanahan-speaks-on-alternating-jimmy-garoppolo-and-trey-lance-at-qb-20210830-0010.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will be QB1</a> for the time being and maybe, he could even take over the job for good.

Even though the 49ers couldn’t get the job done at home vs. the Seahawks, Lance was still fairly impressive. He completed 9 of 18 passes for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns, rushing 7 times for an additional 41 yards.
That’s why coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t seem to be too concerned or hurried to bring Garoppolo back, as he recently said that he trusts his prized rookie to lead the way going forward:
“He got hurt sometime in the first half. He said he got stepped on,” Shanahan told NFL.com. “He played for a while with it. We didn’t think it was that bad at the time. (…) About a minute before halftime he was trying to get it going, but he just couldn’t push off it.”
“Hopefully Jimmy’s better and (the injury is) not as bad as we think. But Trey is here for a reason. We want to give him a little time. We want him to be fully ready, but you don’t always have that luxury,” Shanahan said, as per Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.

Lance is an exciting project and maybe he’s ahead of schedule. But he barely played at all last year and doesn’t have a lot of college experience, and he’s coming off a small program in North Dakota State. But hey, we’ve seen crazier things happen, and he’s looked pretty solid thus far.

He was one of the most talented and intriguing prospects in his class but it seemed like it would take some time before he wasready.
Fast-forward to the preseason and Lance has silenced his critics early on. While he may not star for the 49ers for the time being, it seems like he’s way ahead of schedule and that he could put some pressure on Jimmy Garoppolo.
But for now, it seems like coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t worried about that kind of stuff. If anything, he wanted to see both of his guys take the field and showcase their skills, as he alternated them in the same drive during their final preseason game vs. the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/las-vegas-raiders-t102109" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Las Vegas Raiders.</a>

“I just wanted them to get live action of it,” Shanahan told via49erswebzone. “We’ve done it in practice a couple times, and this was the last time before we’re going to get into the regular season. It’s the last time you can have the opportunity to do it, so I kind of wanted to do it in this game. We’ve got two guys who can play and we’ve been doing it in practice a little bit, wanted to do it out there in the game, and it’s always going to be an option.”
It may sound like a crazy or far-fetched idea but it actually worked out pretty well for the team. Even if it’s just the preseason, they were both efficient and completely lit up the rival defense while they were on the field.

<h2>Trey Lance Liked Shanahan’s Idea</h2>
“It’s fun. I trust Coach Shanahan, and I know Jimmy does, and our whole team and locker room does,” Lance said. “He’s going to find ways to get the guys that need the ball the ball and do whatever it takes to win games. So yeah, it was a ton of fun for sure.”
It’s unlikely that we’ll see them do this again in the regular season. But at least, 49ers fans can be sure thatwhoever is under center will be more than ready to lead their offense going forward. If not, he might as well lose his job in no time.

So, when asked about whether he felt like he needed to compete for a starting job right now, the young gunslinger simply said that he’s looking forward to getting to know Garoppolo and learning the ups and downs of being an NFL quarterback:
“Honestly, I’m not really worried about it right now. Right now. I’m just focused on getting there, learning as much as I possibly can. Getting to know Jimmy and the guys in the room and learning. Getting to know him, becoming close with him and like I said, just learning as much as I can. Then at that point, obviously competing,” Lance said, according to the 49ers’ official website.

Lance is well aware of the ‘red flags’ above his head and how hard he’ll have to work before being ready to become a starter in the league. Then again, he doesn’t seem worried or hurried about that:
“Yeah, absolutely. It’s kind of the same stuff, this whole process and I understand it’s a critiquing process, because that’s what it is. It’s probably the longest job interview that I have ever had or longer than I ever thought that I’d have, but I don’t think I could have been in a better situation. Like I said, just super excited to get there and learn and at this point, like I said, the biggest thing for me is just getting there. Getting to know the coaching staff, and my teammates and the guys in the quarterback room,” Lance concluded.
There’s no denying that Trey Lance has all the physical tools and skills to become a franchise player, given enough time to develop. Hopefully, that’ll be the case and we’ll witness another superstar in the making.
