The San Francisco 49ers made a bit of a bold move by taking Trey Lance in the NFL Draft. He was one of the most talented and intriguing prospects in his class but it seemed like it would take some time before he was ready.

Fast-forward to the preseason and Lance has silenced his critics early on. While he may not star for the 49ers for the time being, it seems like he's way ahead of schedule and that he could put some pressure on Jimmy Garoppolo.

But for now, it seems like coach Kyle Shanahan isn't worried about that kind of stuff. If anything, he wanted to see both of his guys take the field and showcase their skills, as he alternated them in the same drive during their final preseason game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kyle Shanahan Says The 49ers Had Already Rotated QBs In Practice

“I just wanted them to get live action of it,” Shanahan told via49erswebzone. “We’ve done it in practice a couple times, and this was the last time before we’re going to get into the regular season. It’s the last time you can have the opportunity to do it, so I kind of wanted to do it in this game. We’ve got two guys who can play and we’ve been doing it in practice a little bit, wanted to do it out there in the game, and it’s always going to be an option.”

It may sound like a crazy or far-fetched idea but it actually worked out pretty well for the team. Even if it's just the preseason, they were both efficient and completely lit up the rival defense while they were on the field.

Trey Lance Liked Shanahan's Idea

“It’s fun. I trust Coach Shanahan, and I know Jimmy does, and our whole team and locker room does,” Lance said. “He’s going to find ways to get the guys that need the ball the ball and do whatever it takes to win games. So yeah, it was a ton of fun for sure.”

It's unlikely that we'll see them do this again in the regular season. But at least, 49ers fans can be sure that whoever is under center will be more than ready to lead their offense going forward. If not, he might as well lose his job in no time.
