Tucker now needs redemption. He will fight for a spot against third-year kicker Blake Grupe. It’s not the worst competition for Tucker, as Grupe has missed eight field goals this year already. Five of those missed field goals are from less than 50 yards.

<h2>The race for QB1</h2>



The competition for the QB1 spot in the Saints’ camp is heating up as the season approaches. With Derek Carr’s retirement, the battle for the starting job is now a three-way race between Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tyler-shough">Tyler Shough</a>.

This will be the Chargers second preseason game as they played on the Hall of Fame game versus the Lions. In that game, it was Trey Lance the one under center. For this game, NFL.com reports that Herbert won’t play, but Lance won’t start either. It’s the turn of Taylor Heinicke.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jim-harbaugh" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jim Harbaugh</a> won’t risk one of the best NFL quarterbacks in a meaningless preseason game, but will give Heinicke the spotlight as he fights to be the second QB on the depth chart. After all, Lance impressed everybody in the Hall of Fame game. He threw for 120 yards, two touchdowns and completed 13/20 passes. Lance had a 114.6 rating in a 34-7 win.



<h2>Saints are on a whole other page</h2>



While everybody knows who the Chargers QB1 is, no one knows who the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-orleans-saints" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saints</a> starting quarterback will be for the upcoming season. There is a battle between Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener.

According to Saints head coach Kellen Moore, “We’ll start Spencer in the game, and then from there we’ll go <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tyler-shough" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tyler</a>, and then Jake.”&nbsp;It seems that, at least for now, is Rattler’s job to lose.

<h2>The QB battle is still open</h2>



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/spencer-rattler" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rattler</a> has impressed the most in the Saints training camp so this is what gave him the chance to start this game. As Moore said, “He’s earned his way as he’s gone through this.” Moore also added, “It will be a great evaluation piece for us. By no means is it any bigger than the collection of all these practices that have occurred.”



The Saints depth chart lists Rattler, Shough and Haeners as co-starters. Plus, Moore said plenty of the starters won’t play, so no QB will play with the first-string offense.

<h2>Dekkers was cut to make room for others</h2>



Dekkers, who played for Iowa State in College, led the Big 12 last year in completion percentage (66.1%) and pass attempts. However, he also led the conference in interceptions with 14.

By him getting cut, the Saints made room to make another roster move. The team signed punter Kai Kroeger in a corresponding move. Kroeger was with the Jets after being an undrafed free agent, but was cut earlier this month. The Saints saw the opportunity to grab him and didn’t stutter.

<h2>So what happens with the Saints’ quarterback battle?</h2>



As of now, it’s rookie Tyler Shough the one posted as QB1 on the depth chart. However, the latest reports say it’s an open battle still. Haener was the one who looked the worst in 2024 compared to Spencer Rattler.



However, Rattler was not blowing minds away. He showed he still has lots to improve in terms of reading defenses, being able to go through his progressions fast enough and decision-making. This is not a stacked QB depth chart by any means, but the Saints are trying to do the most of what they have.

However, when you draft a quarterback in the earlier rounds, some might assume that is the guy to be at the pole position to become an NFL starter. Apparently, that’s not the case for Tyler Shough, who was drafted in the second round. That’s not the case for one of his teammates.



Foster Moreau has served the Saints as a tight end for the past two years. He got 413 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. Speaking to Sirius XM NFL Radio, “I don’t think this front office is just going to hand him the keys. I think he’s&nbsp;truly going to have to prove it,”&nbsp;Moreau said.



The thing is the Saints also have two other relatively young quarterbacks on their roster. Jake Haener is a fourth-round pick in 2023, and Spencer Rattler a fifth-round pick in 2024. Both took over after Derek Carr’s injury but neither had good results. However, Shough is not precisely the best prospect ever, so this is a wide-open battle.



<h2>Spencer Rattler is the most intriguing of them all</h2>



Once projected to be a first overall pick, Rattler’s stock and reputation took a turn for the worse in his last few years in college. He had to stay at the collegiate level for a couple more seasons and fell off all the way to a fifth-round pick. However, if you were once touted as a first overall pick, that’s because the raw talent was there.

If there is a version of that Rattler anywhere, that would be the best-case scenario for the Saints. Recovering that player is a big-time problem as Rattler is years removed from being that good of a prospect, but given the team’s expectations this season and their cap space issues, they might as well try to see who their best quarterback is.

However, if he can recoup, he is an elite talent. Then, they have Demario Davis, Justin Reid and Tyrann Mathieu to go along the way.

“Obviously spent a lot of time in college. Three years at Oregon, three years at Tech and one year at Louisville. I love [Louisville coach] Jeff Brohm. Through Instagram, Tyler Shough shared a passionate message about his dedication to the Saints. “New Orleans, you will get everything out of me,” Shough posted. “I will die on that field for y’all.”

As mentioned earlier, Tyler Shough was among the most seasoned quarterback prospects in this year’s draft class. He spent six years in college, though it wasn’t until 2024 that he emerged as a reliable full-time starter.
