Let’s be brutally honest for a second right here. You don’t have to be a baseball connoisseur to realize that the New York Yankees aren’t good enough to win a World Series right now. They have great pieces, they have stars, but they’re just not build to compete right now.
That’s why, even if he’s always been cautious regarding the trade deadline, Brian Cashman needs to make a couple of bold moves. They can still salvage the season. They have enough talent to be a threat in the postseason, but they need to add more pieces.
So, with that in mind and patience running out at the Bronx, we take a look at the top 4 candidates that the Yankees should look to trade for prior to Friday’s deadline, assuming they want to make a late playoff push.
Trade Candidates For The New York Yankees
4. Freddy Galvis
Freddy Galvis isn’t the marquee name you’d expect the Yankees to go all-in for, but he’s a guy that could solve many of their offensive issues. Not only he’s able to play on nearly every spot in the infield but also he’s a versatile hitter that knows how to get on base.
The Orioles are years away from contention and Galvis is one of their most appealing assets right now, so the Yankees would likely face some competition for his services. He’s the jack of all trades, the kind of player every team needs.
3. Ryan Tepera
Ryan Tepera isn’t a flashy name or one of the most popular relievers in the league. But he’s the reliable, consistent arm they need out of their bullpen, especially given how much they’ve struggled lately.
Tepera missed a lot of bats and his3.02 ERA, 2.88 FIP, and0.816 WHIP are just elite in terms of the available players. The Cubs are expected to be big sellers so he wouldn’t have to be difficult to get at all.
2. Starling Marte
Starling Marte is one of the best available players right now and he’s expected to be heavily pursuit over the next couple of days. The Yankees have already inquired about him and he’s been tied with a move to the Bronx earlier in the season.
Marte gives the Yankees an offensive boost while also providing the outfield defense they’ve been craving for years now. And with the Marlins expected to be sellers as well, New York have enough prospects on their books to make an appealing offer.
1. Trevor Story
Trevor Story is the best player the Yankees can get but even if he’s about to become a free agent, he won’t come cheap. But this would be one of the few times when adding a single player could fix most of a team’s issues.
Story would allow Gleyber Torres to slide to 2nd base and Luke Voit to play at first. Then, Gio Urshela could either be the DH to move Giancarlo Stanton to the outfield or move to the bench. Either way, the Yankees would get a solid hitter and a great defender.
