Originally called the Dallas Texans, the club was founded by Lamar Hunt in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. They are a part of theWestern Divisionof theAmerican Football Conference(AFC) in theNational Football League(NFL).

The team moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs in 1963 after then-Kansas City mayor H. Roe Bartle promised the team they would have more ticket sales. The Chiefs then joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL Merger.

In 1962, 1966, and 1969, the Chiefs won three AFL championships. The Chiefs hold the distinction of being the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to beat an NFL club in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game when they beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.

How many Super Bowl rings do the Chiefs have?

The Chiefs have won theSuper Bowl on two occasions,50 years apart. In 1970, the Kansas City Chiefs won their first title, with Len Dawson winning MVP honors. This came three years after the leaders lost their AFL-NFL World Championship in their first-ever Super Bowl. The better of them that day were Bart Starr and the Packers.

Lastyear in 2020,the Chiefs won their secondring. A rally to defeat the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, was led by Patrick Mahomes. With their victory in the Super Bowl 54 in February 2020, the Chiefs made incrediblehistory.Theylost only two games,14:2, in which the AFC secured the top seed, as Patrick Mahomes dominated the regular season.

That gave Kansas City the chance to be the first repeat champion since the Patriots in 2003 and 2004 on the home road to Super Bowl 55. The Chiefs would become the eighth franchise to claim successive Super Bowl titles if theywere to win Super Bowl 55 on February 7, 2021.This would be the ninth time that an accomplishment has been made altogether.
