The New York Giants and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. promised a fairytale reunion, but the NFL is not a place of fantasy. Each player has to earn a spot and the 53-man roster cut is coming soon.
Pero Connor Hughes of SNY, Beckham‘s future depends on how the Giants approach the depth on that position. “If they keep 7 [receivers] I like his chances, if they keep 6 [receivers] I don’t like them as much.”
The WR room on the Giants is really crowded. Odell Beckham Jr. showed frustration after missing a touchdown catch in a preseason game. That touchdown could’ve elevated his stock. Now, it seems he might or might not be on the Giants to start the season.
OBJ still has some tempting skills
While nowhere near at the top of the pecking order, OBJ still has displayed incredible separation and skills throughout training camp. Per plenty of reports, OBJ’s ability to get open has been good all camp. However, he hasn’t been targeted much.
In fairness, when talking about the sixth or seventh WR on the depth chart, the ability to get open is pretty much an appreciated asset. Hence, OBJ’s chances are not amazing, but there is value to have him on the roster.
The Giants’ WR room
The thing is the WR room in New York is very, very crowded. Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Malachi Fields are all secured. Nabers is the bets, Fields is a third-round rookie, and Slayton is a very safe player to get.
Hence, the next three to four slots are going to be contested between Calvin Austin III, Braxton Berrios, Darnell Mooney, Odell Beckham Jr., Jalyn Hyatt, and Isaiah Hodgins. Berrios and Austin have very similar skill sets, so the Giants might not want to have two players as similar and that should help OBJ’s case.
