Following tonight’s matchup between Chelsea and Palmeiras, the Club World Cup will feature two more quarterfinal matches as teams compete for the final two spots in the semifinals.

This Saturday in Atlanta, Paris Saint-Germain will face Bayern Munich in one of the tournament’s most anticipated clashes so far. A few hours later, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will go head-to-head in New Jersey.

Tonight’s match against Palmeiras will mark Chelsea’s fourth meeting in club history against a Brazilian side. Interestingly, all of those matches have taken place over the past 13 years and have come in FIFA Club World Cups. So far, the record favors the South American teams, with two wins and one loss for Chelsea.

The first matchup came in December 2012, when the Blues qualified for the Club World Cup after winning their first UEFA Champions League title. On that occasion, they suffered a 1–0 defeat in the final against Corinthians. Ten years later, Chelsea faced Palmeiras and claimed a hard-fought 2–1 victory to win what remains their only Club World Cup title to date.

The most recent meeting between the English side and a Brazilian club came in the current edition of the Club World Cup, when Chelsea faced Flamengo in the group stage. On June 20, Chelsea lost 3–1.

The official in charge of Friday’s match between Chelsea and Palmeiras will be Alireza Faghani. The 47-year-old referee, born in Iran and now an Australian national, brings extensive international experience, having started officiating FIFA tournaments in 2008. He also refereed the opening match of the Club World Cup between Inter Miami and Al Ahly.

Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia will host Friday’s match between Chelsea and Palmeiras, part of the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. The stadium, which opened in 2003, was built with a construction budget of $512 million.

With a capacity of 67,594 spectators, Lincoln Financial Field is primarily used for football and serves as the home of the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL and the Temple Owls. It also hosted four matches during the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup and is scheduled to host six games during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The clash between Chelsea and Palmeiras for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will kick off at 9:00 PM (ET).
