The lifelong rivalry between Mexico and the United StatesNational Team does not only take placeon the pitch. These twoalso compete outside of it, for example by trying to attract playersto chose one country over the other, when they have the chance of playing for any of both.

That situation has been happening recentlywithLos Angeles Galaxy‘s young star, Efraín Alvarez. The 18-year-old is one of the most promisingtalents in the MLS and has the possibility of representing the USMNT or Mexico.

He was born in Los Angeles, California, but both of his parents are Mexican. In the minor divisions, Alvarez played with both jerseys, but as he is growing up like a pro, he eventually will have to decide between the two nations. Mexico seems to be one step ahead in this race, though.

The push between Mexico and the USfor securing Alvarez may have a favorite side

Both Mexico and the United States national team showed to be highly interested in attracting Alvarez, as the young playmaker keeps impressing in the world of soccer. That’s why he was selected for both squads for the 2021 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship. When the swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic played for the Galaxy, he pointed out that Alvarez was one to look out for as he had a bright future ahead.

However, the Tri made a step forward in this competition.Gerardo Martino called him up to the senior squad ahead of the International Friendliesagainst Wales and Costa Rica, in an attempt to show Mexico’s enthusiasm to count on him for his entire career.

That selection won’t make Alvarez ineligible for the US, though, as those matches will be friendlies. But it may work out as a good way for the Tri to convince him to finally pick the Mexican national team.

The race to secure the promising star Efraín Alvarez isn’t over yet, even though Mexico seems to be in a better position. This situation still has a lot of suspense and it’s another fight between two lifelong rivals who not only compete on the pitch.
