The anticipation surrounding the September clash between two of boxing’s elite fighters continues to build. With Terence Crawford stepping up two weight classes to challenge Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight crown, experts and former opponents are weighing in on what could become one of the most talked-about bouts of the year.

Among those with a unique perspective is Caleb Plant, who faced Canelo in 2021 in a unification bout that ended with the Mexican champion capturing the final piece of the 168-pound puzzle. Now, with Alvarez preparing to defend those same belts against Crawford, Plant has offered a thoughtful and measured analysis of the matchup.

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Plant didn’t dismiss Crawford’s chances despite the obvious size disadvantage. Instead, he emphasized the intangible qualities that make Crawford a compelling challenger in a fight that promises to test both men’s legacies.

Plant’s cautious endorsement of Crawford

While careful not to name a definitive favorite, Plant expressed genuine respect for Crawford’s skill set and mental fortitude. “I give him a shot. I don’t know who wins and honestly there’s weight classes for a reason, right, but at the same time Terence is a special person with special abilities, special mental fortitude, special strength,” he said.

Plant acknowledged the size and power difference that could favor Canelo but pointed out that Crawford’s determination and adaptability are difficult to underestimate. You can’t put too much past Terence Crawford, especially once he’s got his mind made up and really wants it, he added.

According to Plant, the stylistic elements of both fighters are what make this contest so intriguing. Both have things that fall in their favour, but that’s what makes this so interesting, that’s why everybody will tune in to see what’s going to happen,” he said. He predicted that the fight would be anything but dull, due to both men’s commitment to staying in the pocket and engaging toe-to-toe.

“When it’s two special fighters it’s most fair to just let the bell ring and let them handle it…Bud isn’t going to be running round the ring for 12 rounds. That’s not in his blood and obviously not in Canelo’s either. This is going to be a fan-friendly fight,” Plant concluded.
