Jake Paul returns to the boxing ring tonight in Anaheim to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., a former WBC world middleweight champion whose career has been defined by both talent and controversy.
The bout marks Paul’s first fight since his high-profile exhibition win over Mike Tyson in November 2024, while Chavez Jr., 39, looks to defy critics and hand the 11–1 YouTuber-turned-boxer just his second professional loss. The matchup is set at the Honda Center in California and comes with high stakes for both men.
But perhaps no one has a more personal investment in the outcome than Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., the legendary Mexican fighter who once publicly urged his son to retire due to what he called a “lack of discipline” and “irresponsibility.”
A harsh past, a hopeful present
Back in 2016, Chavez Sr. didn’t mince words when expressing concern over his son’s career trajectory: “If this young man, who is my son, keeps with this lack of discipline… this irresponsibility that he has, I just recommend that he retire and doesn’t fight anymore.”

However, ahead of tonight’s clash, the Hall of Famer has changed his tone. In a recent interview with ESPN Knockout, Chavez Sr. offered a candid and encouraging take after watching his son train for the bout:

“Honestly, this fight is a blessing from God. Once you’re in the ring, everyone’s got a chance… Jake Paul is a young fighter, he’s very motivated, he trains well, and it’s clear he hits hard – but he doesn’t have the quality, you know, as a boxer to beat my son.”
A redemption story in the making?
According to Chavez Sr., his son’s preparation this time has been unlike anything he’s seen before: “I’ve gone to see Julio train twice, and I’ve been truly impressed. Never in his life have I seen him train as hard as he is for this fight. And if he keeps going like this, I told him there’s no doubt in my mind he’s going to beat Jake Paul.”

Tonight’s fight could be pivotal for both men. For Jake Paul, it’s a chance to solidify his place as a legitimate contender with eyes on a future world title shot. For Chavez Jr., it’s a rare opportunity to reclaim credibility and honor—especially with his father’s belief in him finally restored.
