Carlos Narvaez opens up after facing Yankees: ‘Just trying to do my job’

It was the Yankees who gave Carlos Narvaez his MLB debut, but now as a Boston Red Sox player, he’s revealing what it really feels like to face his former team.

Carlos Narvaez may not have spent much time with the New York Yankees, but he hasn’t been forgotten by fans or former teammates who watched him make his MLB debut in 2024. He appeared in just six games for the Yankees, but recently opened up about what it felt like to face his former team.

This wasn’t his first time playing against the Yankees this season. The Red Sox already won a series in the Bronx earlier in the year, taking two out of three. Narvaez played a key role in that series, driving in four runs and hitting a home run—his most productive showing so far this MLB season.

After Boston’s Game 2 win this week, Narvaez reflected on the emotions of facing New York again. Speaking to Ken Rosenthal, he said: “These games against the Yankees, of course, are a little emotional. My former team. But at the same time, I’m just trying to do my job.”

Narvaez is finding his groove with the Red Sox

Now with Boston, Narvaez is doing more than holding his own behind the plate. His .286 batting average reflects a solid offensive performance, with 53 hits, 6 home runs, and 23 RBIs so far this season.

He currently ranks fifth among all Red Sox hitters in batting average, trailing only injured slugger Alex Bregman. He’s also tied for third on the team with 24 walks, alongside Wilyer Abreu—another sign of his growing impact in the lineup.

Why didn’t the Yankees keep Narvaez?

Narvaez was traded to Boston in exchange for pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. While the Yankees have been deep at the catching position, Narvaez faced stiff competition for a long-term role with names like Austin Wells, Ben Rice, and J.C. Escarra in the mix.

As Max Goodman of NJ.com pointed out, “They’ve traded away several quality catchers over these last few years, from Jose Trevino to Ben Rortvedt and Agustin Ramírez, who was the centerpiece of the Jazz Chisholm Jr. trade last summer. When you have that many options and only two spots on the active roster, something has to give.”
