Trevor Bauer is coming off a career year. He was a top Cy Young candidate, one of the most dominating pitchers of the year, and helped the Cincinnati Reds clinch a spot in the expanded MLB postseason, even though the odds weren’t in their favor.
He’s definitely going to draw a lot of attention as a free agent in the offseason, with the Boston Red Soxreportedly eyeing a move for him considering Eduardo Rodríguez and Chris Sale may not be ready for the start of next season.
The Red Sox didn’t even make the playoffs this year and struggled all season with inconsistencies, but they did found a couple of interesting pitchers for their future. However, should they turn the attention to Bauer, they could only sign him on a one-year deal.
Trevor Bauer Vowed To Sign Only One-Year Deals
Turns out that Trevor Bauer is a man of his word and even though he could sign a multi-year deal with many teams, he’s just not going to do it. Why? Well, according to an interview with Jeff Passan, because he doesn’t want to get shot between the legs.
Trevor Bauer said that he made a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ prior to being drafted, claiming that he would only take one-year deals or else, his friend should ‘shoot him in the nuts’ with a paintball gun from 10 feet away.
Bauer elaborated by stating that there’s no downside on signing one-year deals because he’ll always have the chance to play for a contender as long as they have enough money to keep him around.
Boston Red Sox To Add Another Pitcher
General Manager Chaim Bloom recently acknowledged that even though some players proved to be up to the occasion and that they hope that 21-year-old prospect Bryan Mata cracks their rotation next year, they still need to add a couple of pitchers if they intend to contend:
“I don’t say that to disrespect anybody that we have, but clearly, you look at the results and you look at how it has gone, and it’s not something you can have if you expect to have a winning season. There’s no question. I don’t think I’m breaking news by saying that,” Bloom told WEEI.
Obviously, Bauer will headline a free-agent pitchers class that will also feature Masahiro Tanaka, Marcus Stroman, and Taljuan Walker. But as you know by now, you can only sign him for twelve months.
