The Dallas Mavericks charted a bold course for their future by selecting Cooper Flagg in the 2025 NBA Draft. Seen as a crucial component of the franchise’s long-term vision, Flagg’s arrival carries additional significance following Luka Doncic’s departure. Anticipation ran high ahead of Flagg’s Summer League debut, but his performance left many fans underwhelmed. Instead of offering excuses, Flagg delivered a candid self-assessment.
“The coaches have a lot of confidence in me. They were telling me they want me to experiment, try some new things. I was trying to be aggressive. That’s new for me, too. I would say that might be one of the worst games of my life. We got the win, so that’s what really matters to me… Shots weren’t falling, but that’s going to happen,” Cooper Flagg said, as reported by Joey Mistretta.
In the matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, Flagg scored 10 points in the first half but remained scoreless in the second. Despite this, the Mavericks’ Summer League head coach Josh Broghamer commended him for his defensive hustle and knack for making winning plays. His potential remains undeniable, and he is poised for significant growth throughout the 2025-26 NBA season.
Cooper faced the criticism and disappointment with maturity, fully aware of his rookie status. Speaking with ESPN, he acknowledged the challenges: “It’s going to be nights like that. It is somewhat new to me. I haven’t probably taken that many shots before, so that’s somewhat new. I’m going to try and figure it out. But new experience, so I’m excited to keep playing and move forward.”
