The Houston Rockets faced off against the Phoenix Suns in a NBA game that carried more than just competitive tension—it also came with a sentimental connection between Rockets head coach Ime Udoka and Suns star Kevin Durant.
Durant, widely regarded as one of the hardest-working players in the league, left a lasting impression on Udoka during their time together with the Brooklyn Nets. Despite ultimately requesting a trade during the 2022-23 season, Durant remained fully committed to his craft.
Speaking before the game, Udoka recalled how Durant’s relentless approach to training stood out—even for a former MVP and multiple-time All-NBA selection.
“It was even before [Brooklyn] that I had him with USA Basketball for a bit, and his day-to-day approach is unlike anybody I’ve really ever seen,” Udoka said. “I think young guys have seen that with USA, and then obviously, day-to-day with Brooklyn as well. He goes about his business the same way.

“Regardless, he’s a dude that, with all the accolades he has, still has a chip and is as grumpy—grumpy as hell every other day. But he holds himself to a high standard, and nothing will change as far as that approach.”

Durant’s influence on young players: work ethic and competitive mentality
Beyond being one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, Kevin Durant has set the standard for professionalism and discipline. Coaches and teammates alike have praised his unwavering commitment to the game, making him a role model for young players striving for greatness.
From his early days with the Oklahoma City Thunder to his championship runs with the Golden State Warriors, and now with the Suns, Durant has maintained a meticulous training routine. His preparation extends beyond traditional practices—his pregame regimen includes specialized shooting drills, game-situation simulations, and strength-training sessions. Despite his lean frame, he has dedicated himself to building the necessary endurance and physical strength to compete at an elite level.
Just as Udoka noted, Durant’s drive remains unshaken even after securing multiple championships and accolades. His relentless pursuit of excellence has been instrumental in his sustained success, proving that talent alone isn’t enough without the right mindset and work ethic.
Durant’s lasting legacy
Durant’s influence transcends his championships and individual honors. His dedication to constant improvement has inspired an entire generation of players.
