One common belief among fans is that athletes in any sport often don’t maintain strong relationships outside their respective fields or courts. In the NBA, however, there are numerous examples of players having good relationships with their rivals. But in the case of LeBron James, star of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Michael Jordan, a Chicago Bulls legend, their relationship is far from typical.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, LeBron was asked about the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) debate and where Jordan fits into it. LeBron revealed that, although the two share a mutual respect, they don’t stay in touch. “Me and Michael are in a good spot, but we don’t talk,” James stated.
It may come as a surprise to fans that the two greatest players in NBA history aren’t conversing regularly. Though they never played in the same era, and their respective franchises had different rivalries, the Lakers-Bulls rivalry isn’t as intense as others in NBA history.
LeBron went on to explain the reasoning behind his unexpected comment about his relationship with Bulls legend. “I guess it is because I’m still playing. I’m still focused on my craft and all that stuff. And you know MJ, he is a ruthless competitor, and as long as my name is written alongside his, I’ll be his competition. But I hope once I retire, I can get along more with MJ,” LeBron remarked.

LeBron compares his relationship with MJ to his bond with Kobe
LeBron James often draws comparisons between his relationships with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, two of the greatest players in NBA history. His thoughts on these relationships offer insight into how his connections with both players evolved over time.

While Jordan remains a central figure in the GOAT conversation, Kobe Bryant’s name was also prominent throughout LeBron’s career, particularly during their battles in Cleveland and Miami.
Reflecting on his relationship with Kobe, LeBron explained how their bond shifted from one of rivalry to friendship.“Me and Kobe never really had a good relationship either, until the Olympic Teams in ’08 and ’12. But we were really competitive because I was in the East, and he was in the West,” LeBron shared.
LeBron continued, adding, “I made a mistake when we didn’t beat Orlando in ’09, which would’ve set up a matchup with him. But it wasn’t until I joined the Lakers and he retired that our relationship truly improved. He welcomed me with open arms, called me every day to check how I was feeling. Even when I passed him in the scoring record, he congratulated me, and that’s something I’ll never forget.”
LeBron’s respect for Jordan’s legacy
One unforgettable moment for NBA fans was when LeBron and Jordan shared the spotlight during the league’s 75th Anniversary celebration. The two legends, along with other players, shared a moment of mutual respect that resonated deeply with fans.
LeBron spoke candidly about his admiration for Jordan and the impact his legacy had on him. “That moment was dope, and it showed the respect we have for each other, the admiration. MJ, like I said, gave me tons of inspiration to become what I am right now. In Ohio, you looked for the best in each discipline, and MJ was the one with the Chicago Bulls,“ LeBron said.
