Chase Daniel’s time with Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs was defined by his role as a trusted backup quarterback. He served under Reid from 2013 to 2015. During that time, Daniel was valued for his knowledge of the system and his ability to help develop young talent. However, he left the team in search of more playing time. Recently, Daniel shared a surprising story about a possible return to the Chiefs in 2018. He also explained why he ultimately decided against it.

It was going back to Kansas City that 2018 offseason with Andy Reid because they wanted me to be the guy to help usher in the Patrick Mahomes era…That’s a fact. But I think the money was like $3.5 million a year, and then Chicago had just hired Matt Nagy, who was my quarterbacks coach. They said, ‘We’ll offer you $5 million a year, $10 million total, and pretty much guarantee it all.’ I’m like, ‘I gotta go with the money’,” stated Chase Daniel on Scoop City podcast.

The Kansas City Chiefs had a clear plan to ease Patrick Mahomes into the starting role. Chase Daniel was expected to play a key part in that process. However, Daniel chose the financial security of the Chicago Bears, where he served as Mitchell Trubisky’s backup. Meanwhile, Mahomes quickly rose to stardom in Kansas City. He earned MVP honors in his first season as a starter.

Chase Daniel never played a major role in the Chiefs’ rise. However, his decision highlights how financial and career considerations influence NFL journeys. In hindsight, being part of Mahomes’ early development in Kansas City could have added another layer to his career. Still, Daniel saw the security of a guaranteed deal in Chicago as an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
