A new battle has begun in the AFC South. With the arrival of Daniel Jones, the Colts must now decide who will start the 2025 NFL season: him or Anthony Richardson.
In 2023, the Colts used their first-round pick to select Anthony Richardson. Scouts viewed him as a top prospect with qualities similar to Cam Newton—a quarterback who can throw effectively but also pose a threat on the ground due to his athletic build.
While his early performances were impressive, multiple injuries prevented him from fully showcasing his skills. Now, he’ll need to fight to reclaim his starting job, this time competing with a newcomer like Daniel Jones.

He started strong, and fans believed he could lead them to success. However, injuries took a toll, and he was eventually benched in favor of veteran Joe Flacco.
This offseason, the Colts parted ways with Flacco and brought in another veteran. Indianapolis signed Daniel Jones—most recently with the Vikings—to spark a new competition for the starting quarterback job in 2025.
Last year, Jones was released midseason by the Giants and joined the Vikings for the final games of the campaign. While many believe Richardson is the favorite to start, HC Shane Steichen has revealed that no final decision has been made yet on who will lead the offense.

“We’re breaking down the reps,” Steichen said, via transcript from the team. “They are both getting one reps. They’re both getting two reps. I think through OTAs, we’ve got nine good practices. They’ll both get about 170 reps a piece with those guys, with the ones and twos, and we’ll flip-flop them. You guys were out there today. You saw how it worked, and that’s how it’s going to go.”
What is Daniel Jones’ contract with the Indianapolis Colts?
Daniel Jones has seen a steep decline in recent months. Once among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, he struggled to find a team for the 2025 season after being cut by New York.
