NFL News: Mike Tomlin and Steelers are ready to sign a veteran quarterback as Aaron Rodgers is hesitant to choose Pittsburgh

With Aaron Rodgers still unsure about committing to Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin and the Steelers aren’t waiting around. The team is shifting gears and preparing to bring in a proven veteran to stabilize the quarterback room before the 2025 season kicks off.

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to sign a veteran quarterback regardless of what Aaron Rodgers decides. According to a report by Gerry Dulac, the team will not go into the 2025 season with a depth chart consisting of Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and a rookie.

“Even if they don’t sign Aaron Rodgers, they’re going to go and sign a veteran quarterback. I’m just looking at some traces that could possibly happen. This is the problem with waiting on Aaron Rodgers. You lost out on a couple of possibilities like Jameis Winston and Joe Flacco. That is the one downside of waiting for Aaron Rodgers.”

The Steelers are in a very tough situation. Although they want a star like Aaron Rodgers, the veteran’s delay has left them with virtually no options in free agency.

Who will Steelers sign at quarterback?

According to Dulac’s information, the Steelers could sign Kirk Cousins (if the Falcons trade him), Carson Wentz, or, in a very unlikely scenario, Ryan Tannehill. What is certain, no matter what happens, is that Omar Khan will go for a veteran in the coming weeks.

“They are not going to go into a season with Mason Rudolph and then a rookie as the backup quarterback. They have never done that in their life. They always have two veteran quarterbacks. They always keep three on the roster, unlike most teams. And two of them are experienced, starting capable. I’m not saying the backup is a Hall of Famer. Just go backward, Charlie Batch or Byron Leftwich. Even when they brought in Mitch Trubisky. That’s what they believe in that position. So, they’re not going to go into the season with Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and a rookie quarterback. Aaron Rodgers or no Aaron Rodgers, a veteran quarterback will be added somewhere.”
