NFL News: Mike Tomlin and Steelers could reportedly pursue surprising quarterback if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t sign with Pittsburgh

With the Steelers still searching for a veteran presence under center, Aaron Rodgers remains their top target, but if that deal falls through, Mike Tomlin and GM Omar Khan could turn to a surprising backup plan.

If Aaron Rodgers doesn’t sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan could pursue Kirk Cousins, according to a report by Adam Schefter. This would follow the team’s historic trend of having two veteran quarterbacks on the roster.

“I think they feel like Mason Rudolph can and would be good enough to start the season. That’s how they feel, but, I do think that they would then inquire about Kirk Cousins and try to make a deal. I think that would make some sense.”

The Steelers haven’t won the Super Bowl in over 16 years and are about to reach a decade without a playoff victory. Because of this, they need a quarterback who can help them compete in the AFC against powerhouses like the Kansas City Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills.

Who will be the next Steelers quarterback?

Aaron Rodgers is the primary option, but Schefter mentions that if that doesn’t happen, Kirk Cousins immediately becomes an alternative. There are no other big names available on the market.

In fact, to bring in Cousins, the Steelers would have to make a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, and the main issue to discuss is which team would absorb the majority of the quarterback’s large salary.

“They do like Mason Rudolph and they’re going to feel like they’re not going to have another quarterback. They’re going to feel that way, but, I would think that they’ll explore a trade for Kirk Cousins if Aaron Rodgers decides not to play, which, by the way, I think everybody thinks he’ll decide to play in Pittsburgh.”
