The Jacksonville Jaguars head into the 2025 NFL season with renewed expectations under new head coach Liam Coen. After a 2024 campaign in which Trevor Lawrence began to show his potential, the team is looking to use this offseason to solidify him within a more dynamic offensive system, which now includes rookie Travis Hunter.

During training camp, Hunter has shown he has the potential to be a key weapon for Lawrence, while also playing a defensive role. The young prospect, selected second overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, has drawn attention for his ability to line up both as a wide receiver and a cornerback.

This week, his place in the starting lineup was confirmed for the preseason, where the Jaguars will face a Pittsburgh Steelers team that won’t include Aaron Rodgers. In that context, quarterback Lawrence sent Hunter a message about his two-way duties.

Lawrence’s “selfish” advice for Hunter

Trevor Lawrence was clear when discussing Hunter’s potential impact: “Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more. And I told him, ‘Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two? That’s a decision you have to make,’” Lawrence told NFL Network.

With that, Lawrence emphasized how he believes Hunter can shine more on offense than defense. “He’s so talented, it’s hard to keep him off the field,” added the Jaguars quarterback. The final decision will be made by head coach Liam Coen, who is well aware of his star player’s preferences.

Lawrence talks about Jaguars’ expectations

Lawrence’s view reflects that of a quarterback with a 22–38 record in the 60 regular season games he has started so far in his NFL career. Still, the 25-year-old believes it’s “very realistic” to expect the Jaguars to be a playoff team this year. “We’ve got to prove it on Sundays this fall,” said Lawrence.
