Auston Matthews’ Maple Leafs confront crucial choice on Bobby McMann’s future following Mitch Marner’s move to Vegas

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have found a late-blooming gem in Bobby McMann, but a crucial decision looms as the forward enters the final year of his contract alongside Auston Matthews. Following Mitch Marner’s departure to the Vegas Golden Knights, McMann’s role—and future—becomes even more significant for a team in transition.

Last season, McMann emerged as an unexpected offensive threat, tallying 20 goals and showcasing his dynamic speed and lethal wrist shot. At $1.35 million AAV, he proved to be one of the team’s best value players, offering timely scoring and physicality. Is Bobby McMann worth a new contract?

While McMann’s breakout season was impressive, there are still questions about sustainability—particularly given that he’s already 29. According to The Leafs Nation’s Jon Steitzer, a modest raise to around $3 million annually would be justifiable, considering McMann’s size, energy, and production.

“The Leafs don’t use Bobby McMann like a 20-goal scorer, but two seasons of strong NHL results show that’s what he is,” Steitzer noted. “He hits, carries the puck well, has a smart shot, and holds his own defensively.”

Though his playoff performance dipped—McMann ended the season on a 13-game goalless streak that began with an 11-game drought in the regular season or inflates too quickly.

Why the Maple Leafs may want to act now

McMann’s late-blooming status complicates things. He could still have several productive years ahead, but the risk is that his current price tag won’t last. If he starts hot again this season, Toronto may find themselves priced out of a future extension—or looking to trade him for a top-six reinforcement while his value peaks.

Steitzer adds a note of caution: “There might be some concern that the bubble has burst on McMann’s offense… but panic isn’t warranted yet.”

Whether the Leafs choose to extend McMann at a team-friendly rate, explore trade options, or allow the season to play out before making a decision, one thing is clear: Bobby McMann’s future will play a pivotal role in Toronto’s roster construction as they chase a Stanley Cup—and he’s positioned for either a championship run or a significant payday.
