The recent loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final hit hard within the Edmonton Oilers organization, fueling a strong hunger for redemption. Building a competitive roster is now a top priority—and perhaps, dreaming long term isn’t off the table either. At the center of it all is Connor McDavid, and an unexpected twist in contract talks could drastically change the outlook.

The team’s star still needs to work with the front office to determine the final resolution regarding his contract situation. As he enters the final year of his deal with the Oilers, the talented center could ultimately decide to take his future in a different direction.

According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, there’s a possibility that McDavid may ultimately choose not to sign an eight-year extension. Instead, he could opt for a four-year deal.

A competitive team around McDavid

It’s clear that the Oilers’ top priority is to keep Connor McDavid on the team for as many years as possible. However, if a deal ends up being only for four years, it would undoubtedly be the least favorable scenario for the franchise.

If there’s anything that could entice the team’s star to agree to an eight-year deal, it would undoubtedly be the promise of being well surrounded—by both young talent and experienced players—capable of making the team a contender year after year.

With the Stanley Cup remaining an elusive goal in recent seasons, it’s imperative to build a team that can rise to the occasion. Head coach Kris Knoblauch will need to find the best possible way to surround Connor McDavid with the right pieces heading into what lies ahead.

McDavid’s current contract situation

Connor McDavid is currently entering the final year of his eight-year, $100 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers, which carries a $12.5 million annual cap hit. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026 if an extension isn’t signed.

While there’s no rush from McDavid’s side, and he’s taking his time to evaluate the team’s direction, the Oilers have made it clear that re-signing him is their top priority. Discussions for a new deal are ongoing, with projections indicating a record-breaking contract, potentially for a shorter term like four years, to align with the NHL’s rising salary cap.
