Barcelona and Boca Juniors will meet on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 for the Maradona Cup to honor the Argentinian soccer legend  a year after he passed away. The game will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The first announcement of the match was made by Turki Al Alshaikh, Saudi Royal Court Advisor, on Twitter, on October 11. At first, the match was supposed to be played on November 25, but the new date makes more sense for both teams.

In December, Barcelona won’t have to worry about the Champions League group stage, in which they’re in a delicate situation, while the 2021 Argentine Primera Division will be over. However, Boca could play the final of the Copa Argentina, but the date would be determined accordingly.

Barcelona and Boca Juniors to play the Copa Maradona

To pay tribute to Diego Maradona, it’s not a better choice than Boca Juniors and Barcelona to play this tournament as the Argentine played for both teams during his career and left his mark in these clubs.

Diego played with Barca between 1982 and 1984, after joining from Boca in 1981. He came back to the Xeneize between 1995 and 1997 to conclude his career. Now, both clubs will face to honor one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

Barcelona and Boca have faced each other 10 times in friendly matches. Their most recent encounter took place in the Joan Gamper Trophy in 2018, where Barcelona won 3-0 with goals from Lionel Messi, Rafinha and Malcolm.
