Long before Lionel Messi took the world by storm, the whole planet was already in awe of another Argentinean superstar: Diego Armando Maradona, who some still believe is the greatest soccer player to ever do it.

They were often compared and at times antagonized, but Messi and Maradona held a close relationship through most of their careers. In fact, Maradona even coached him and Argentina en route and during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

That’s why the world was expecting to see what Messi had to say in the wake of Maradona’s sudden passing, and even though it took him a while to come through, number 10 eventually shared his thoughts on social media.

Lionel Messi Shares Heartbreaking Message Amid Diego Maradona’s Passing

“It’s a very sad day for all Argentineans and for soccer. He’s leaving us but he’s not gone, because El Diego is forever. I will cherish the great moments we lived together and I want to send my best wishes to his family and friends. RIP,” The Barcelona star wrote.

People were giving Messi a hard time for how long it took him to react to his idol’s and friend’s passing. Then again, we can’t judge him and we just don’t know how difficult it must be for those who met him, especially for Messi.
