Once the Tokyo 2020 Olympics end on August 8, the attention will shift to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The coronavirus pandemic that delayed the Summer Olympics by 12 months forced organizers to rethink their initial plans. Only once before in its 124-year history has an edition been delayed.

Because of its scheduled dates of July 24, through August 9, 2020, the original program was planned up only before the Games, in March 2020. Despite the postponement, Tokyo 2020's brand name was retained for branding purposes.

COVID-19 regulations prevent fans from attending the closing ceremony, just as they did at the opening ceremony. However, dignitaries and officials, as well as athletes who are still in Tokyo, will be in attendance. Although many of the moments are pre-recorded, there will be some live moments during the event.
