Although the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> remain a work in progress—with Connor Bedard essentially running a one-man show—the Oilers believe the experienced Chicago defenseman can be the perfect addition to their championship equation.



“Hearing talks are intensifying for Edmonton to acquire Connor Murphy from Chicago,” Elliotte Friedman reported on his X account. If the report turns out to be true, the trade between McDavid’s Oilers and Bedard’s Blackhawks involving Murphy may very well be dubbed the “Tre Connor” move.

According to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, Murphy is headed to Edmonton for a second-round pick. Moreover, the Blackhawks will reportedly retain half of his $4.4 million cap hit ($2.2 million).

So far in the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season, Murphy has recorded perfect attendance, playing in all 60 games for the Blackhawks. Recording an average ice time of 16:34 minutes per game, Murphy has put up 13 points (4 goals and 9 assists), as well as a -3 plus/minus and 46 penalty minutes (PIM). Murphy’s numbers indicate he is not a menace in the offensive zone, but he can be very effective in his own zone. For the Oilers, that may be all they’ve been looking for.

Moreover, as teams in the penthouse prepare for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they look down at the disheartened Canucks in search of a diamond in the rough. 



In that regard, Pettersson may very well be a key addition for any organization with Stanley Cup hopes. Still, his personality is often frowned upon around the league, and it could steer teams away from him. When asked about the rumors surrounding his name, Pettersson delivered a stern response—one that only reinforced that perception.



“I mean, it’s you guys who make the trade rumors so ask yourself,” Elias Pettersson told reporters after practice on Monday, via Adam Kierszenblat of The Hockey News.

<h2>Could Pettersson be traded?</h2>



It feels like there is always drama surrounding Pettersson in Vancouver. Last offseason, the Canucks’ front office made a choice they can’t take back. During the 2023-24 season, Vancouver re-signed Pettersson to an eight-year, $92.8 million extension—an $11.6 million annual cap hit running through 2032.

But if he’s content to stay in British Columbia, the front office is essentially powerless.

How much the Bruins are willing to spend, though, is a different question. According to Sweeney, the organization is focused on making wise financial decisions rather than impulsive, rushed moves. In the past, Boston has—quite literally—paid the price for waiting until the deadline to make acquisitions. Having parted ways with several high draft picks, Sweeney admitted that some of those moves backfired, but he has no regrets about them. At the time, they seemed like the right call, and he stands by that statement.



“You’re not wrong in the fact that we spent likely too much collateral assets to try and win. Despite being selected by the Calgary Flames in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and first traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, every game Fox has played in during his NHL career has been with the Blueshirts. In the blink of an eye, it could all change for Fox. The 28-year-old could go from being among the candidates to wear the ‘C’ in New York—which J.T. Miller was awarded—to packing his bags, with only months in between. 



At the moment, it’s only noise, though. Any decision is Fox’s to make. His seven-year, $66.5 million contract with the Rangers includes a full no-movement clause (NMC) through the 2026–27 season. During the last two seasons of his deal, the clause flips to a modified no-trade clause (M-NTC), as Fox must hand the Rangers a 16-team no-trade list. Thus, if he wants to leave ahead of the trade deadline, he must waive his NMC first. 



Contrary to Artemi Panarin’s situation earlier in the season, Fox is not a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA), so the Rangers will have no rush to work out a trade. Panarin could use his situation for leverage; Fox cannot—although he might not be speaking softly anymore, and he is known to carry a stick.

Laine remains on injured reserve (IR) and is practicing in a non-contact jersey, which means the Canadiens will face even more hurdles if they hope to move him for a reasonable return. If not, they can either trade him for peanuts or let destiny run its course and wait to see what happens in free agency.



The Canadiens held out hope for Laine for some time, but it now appears his redemption arc simply was not meant to be in Quebec’s metropolis. His 70-point campaign in 2017–18 remains the best season of his career. Because of injuries, difficult stops around the NHL, and ongoing struggles on the ice, those memories feel more distant with each passing day.

As it stands, Bedard is carrying a one-man show in the Windy City. Aside from the occasional highlight-reel play, it has not been a pleasant sight. As a result, captain Nick Foligno issued a five-word directive to the rest of the team. Both sides have made their willingness to work out an extension clear, but rather than focus on paperwork during the season, Bedard is content to kick the can down the road. Once the offseason begins, he will have plenty of time for that.



Moreover, his RFA status provides Chicago with security and eliminates any fear of losing him in a bidding war. Finally, while speculation about Bedard being traded ahead of the deadline may generate clicks and social media buzz, such a scenario is, in reality, downright illogical. If there is a beacon of hope for the Blackhawks, it is Bedard, and there is no chance they would move on from him. He belongs to a select group of NHL players who simply do not have a price tag.
