The puck definitely hasn’t bounced the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">New York Rangers</a>’ way during Mike Sullivan’s first year in Manhattan. With the Broadway Blueshirts spiraling out of control in the NHL, a report suggests they are taking their time before rushing to a decision on Artemi Panarin’s future.



As things stand, the best option for New York to get back on track may be to part ways with its most valuable assets. Simply put, GM Chris Drury and the front office may have to put up the garage sale sign outside Madison Square Garden. 



With that in mind, there is one clear trade candidate who could soon be packing his bags in the Big Apple: Panarin. Though a fan favorite, his contract situation—combined with the team’s ongoing struggles in recent <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> seasons—has put the Rangers between a rock and a hard place.



However, there is still a long ways ahead of the NHL trade deadline (March 6th), so <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan">Sullivan</a> and the Rangers—though urged, are not hitting the panic button just yet. According to a report around the league, the brass in New York has yet to approach Panarin about a potential move. Considering Panarin’s deal includes a full no movement clause (NMC), that’s one hurdle the Rangers must clear sooner or later.

“My understanding after speaking to a league source on Tuesday is that the Rangers have yet to approach Panarin about his willingness to waive the NMC or his preferred destinations,” The Athletic’s Vince Mercogliano reported. “The [Rangers] have yet to make any final decisions.”

As things stand, all signs indicate he will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1—unless the Rangers can identify a trade destination for which the Russian star is willing to waive his no-movement clause. 



The other possibility is Panarin re-signing in the Big Apple, but with him turning 35 next season and the Blueshirts trending toward lottery-pick territory, fans in New York City shouldn’t hold their breath.



<h2>Rangers could hit reset</h2>



When all else fails, it may be time to hit the reset button. For the Rangers, that appears to be the case. It’s a tough pill to swallow for an organization that reached the Eastern Conference Final just two seasons ago. However, nothing seems to be working right now for New York, and the sooner the Blueshirts accept that reality, the easier it may be to begin a rebuilding phase. 



That’s far easier said than done, and the fact that two-time Stanley Cup–winning head coach Sullivan hasn’t been around long enough to visit every attraction during his time in New York City only makes the situation more complicated. Things are never simple in the City That Never Sleeps, and Panarin’s situation is not the exception.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">New York Rangers</a> keep reaching new lows in their embarrassing 2025-26 NHL season. After the 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken, head coach Mike Sullivan voiced a stern reminder to Alexis Lafreniere and the rest of the squad in The Big Apple.



“We need more,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan">Mike Sullivan</a> admitted after the loss on home ice to the Kraken, via The New York Post. “We need more out of some guys. I think [Lafreniere] is a guy who can bring more to the table for us.”



So far in the 2025-26 NHL season, Lafreniere registers 24 points (9 goals and 15 assists) in 47 appearances with the NY Rangers. Needless to say, his underwhelming production is closely tied to the team’s overall struggles.



It would be both unfair and nonsensical to suggest the Broadway Blueshirts are second-to-last in the East because of Lafreniere’s struggles, but the truth is he hasn’t done much to help, either.

<h2>Lafreniere’s journey</h2>



Selected with the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Lafreniere was expected to be great. While the term “generational talent” is often misused or applied too loosely to projected first-overall selections, Lafreniere did put on a show during his time in the QMJHL, leading fans and analysts to believe he could become an all-time great in the league.

He can still blossom into one, but six seasons into his career, the letdowns have far outweighed the highs for Lafreniere on Broadway. Now, not even his head coach, Sullivan, is sugarcoating his feelings. New York needs more out of the player it once believed would be its franchise savior.



<h2>Rangers’ losing streak</h2>



Following the loss to the Kraken, Sullivan’s Rangers have now dropped four straight games and are 2-6-2 in their last 10 outings. The scoring woes are impossible to ignore. In their past four losses, New York has scored just two goals per game. 



In today’s NHL, that simply isn’t enough. Regardless of Igor Shesterkin’s presence in net, the Rangers must pick up the pace offensively while improving defensively as well. The Blueshirts have been outscored 22–8 during their current skid, including a humiliating 10–2 defeat at Madison Square Garden to the Boston Bruins.

However, for an organization with the third youngest roster in the league, it’s all about playing the long game. Planning for the future means exploring the market for veterans to make room for exciting prospects, and that is exactly what the Hawks are doing.



The NHL trade deadline is still a long ways ahead—set for March 6 at 3pm ET—but it’s never too early for teams to receive calls and knock on doors around the league. On that note, a report indicates the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> have been doing their due diligence on some veteran teammates of Bedard and company.



“Frank Seravalli mentioned on the pregame show that the Blackhawks have received ‘lots of calls’ to this point on Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy. He said both are ‘likely’ to be moved by the trade deadline to open up spots for [Anton] Frondell, [Sam] Rinzel, and potentially others,” as reported by @BlackhawksFocus on X.

Both Dickinson (30) and Murphy (32) are playing the final year of their contracts with the Blackhawks. Set to become unrestricted free agents (UFAs) this summer, their career timelines aren’t quite in sync with Chicago’s, which is on track to boast one of the most electric young squads in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>.

Dickinson’s deal, which carries a $4.25 million cap hit, includes no job security, so finding a trading team shouldn’t be too difficult.

After being re-assured of how much they need <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-bedard">Connor Bedard</a> to be healthy, Jeff Blashill and the Hawks have taken a firm stance on how the former first overall pick in the NHL will be utilized.



After a 12-game absence that felt like forever, Bedard finally returned to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> lineup during a 5–1 loss to the Washington Capitals. Shockingly, it was with him on the ice that Chicago’s four-game winning streak came to an abrupt end. 



However, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Hawks are a much scarier team when the 20-year-old North Vancouver star is active. Chicago’s 5–6–1 record without Bedard this season indicates just that. Now, in order to ensure Bedard never misses another game, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill">Blashill</a> and company have made a drastic decision: Bedard is being barred from the faceoff dot.



“Blashill said Bedard will continue not taking any draws ‘for the foreseeable future‘,” as reported by Chicago Sun-Times. The coaching decision has been issued to protect the wonderkid who injured his shoulder on Dec. 12, 2025 in a last-second faceoff against the St. Louis Blues. Though cleared for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> action, Chicago believes it’s best for Bedard to be kept on the wing when the puck is dropped.

<h2>Precautionary approach to Bedard’s injury</h2>



During the loss to the Capitals, Bedard was initially played on the wing. However, Blashill did instruct him to return to his center position occasionally. One thing was clear, though, Bedard would take no part in faceoffs.

Instead, fellow youngsters Oliver Moore and Ryan Greene took turns replacing Bedard at the dot during faceoffs. Based on Blashill’s postgame comments this trend will continue for the upcoming games in the 2025-26 NHL season—if not the campaign entirely. 



<h2>Olympic dream</h2>



Though being left off Team Canada’s roster for the 2026 Olympics broke Bedard’s heart, there is a still a slim chance for him to join the Maple Leaf in Milan. As long as the door is the tiniest bit open, Bedard will remain hopeful. On that note, being preserved by his organization could be both a blessing as a burden.

On the one hand, Bedard would avoid re-aggravating his shoulder injury by being left off faceoffs. However, that could also be seen by Team Canada GM Doug Armstrong and head coach Jon Cooper as a sign that he is not fully healthy. 



If it came down to it, the Canadian team may have to resort to a last-minute option, and a Bedard who can’t be trusted to win faceoffs—an area he blossomed in during the year—could be the deciding factor between calling him up or resorting to another candidate. Needless to say, Canada can put together a gold-medal–caliber roster entirely made up of players currently set to miss the Olympics, so options abound for Team Canada.
