According to Woj, the former Lakers HC drew interest from multiple teams for a top assistant job this offseason. The likes of the Golden State Warriors and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba/nba-rumors-darvin-ham-couldve-gone-from-lebron-james-lakers-to-kevin-durants-suns">Phoenix Suns have been linked with Ham</a>, but he’s ultimately going back to a familiar place.

The talented guard also talked about the current state of the league and how tough things are in the Western Conference. On top of that, he chose the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA Finals:



“I gotta go Dallas just because I can’t choose Boston. It’s a tough question because it’s such a tough league,” Reaves said. “There’s so many teams that are growing, you see like the OKCs, the Minnesotas (Timberwolves), and obviously the two teams that are left, young teams that have been together for a while and learned to play in a system around one another. I feel like that’s something you need in any sport you play like consistency is basically a system and just growing with what we have.”

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Dubs have held talks with Ham over the last few weeks over a possible role as an assistant coach. However, it looks like it won’t come to fruition:



“The Warriors had some conversation with former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham in recent weeks, per league sources. That isn’t expected to materialize. But it is a signal of the Warriors’ desire to add a big-name assistant, and indications are they are in search of either a former head coach or former player to fill the role. If Atkinson leaves, they may add two assistant coaches. It remains a fluid time across the league in the coaching world.“



An assistant at the Milwaukee Bucks before taking the reins of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers">Lakers</a> in the summer of 2022, Ham left Los Angeles with a 90-74 record in his first head coaching experience.

While the purple and gold made the 2023 Western Conference Finals on his watch, the feeling was that Ham ultimately failed to get the most out of a squad led by <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james">LeBron James</a>. Buha had a very impressive performance in Summer League, and he looked like the serviceable 3-and-D wing that could’ve come in handily multiple times. With that in mind, they’ll likely try to retain him as a restricted free agent:



“So, from my understanding, the Lakers are going to try to retain him. Now as for what that deal would look like, based on the Lakers’ track record, it would probably be a three-year deal — maybe four, given his youth — but at least three. I would probably lean three and then something in like the $15 (million) to $20 million range. So, something like five to seven million annually,” added Buha.

“LeBron doesn’t get involved in coaching hires, for years for many many coaches he’s always taken a distance,” said Windhorst in an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, via ClutchPoints. “In fact, and I can’t say this for every candidate, but he generally has a rule that he won’t engage with the candidate.“

Unsurprisingly, that approach only lasted for one game, as James then was on the floor as often as usual. According to a report by Bryan Fonseca of The New York Post, the 39-year-old veteran ‘bristled’ at the idea and forced Ham to change his mind:



“ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported that Ham wanted to put forth a minutes restriction on the now 39-year-old LeBron James, with the idea that he’d be fresher for the postseason,” frote Fonseca. “According to the report, James “bristled at the idea” and it was subsequently scrapped a few games into the season.”

That means if LeBron James decides to stay, he’ll have a new coach for the fourth time in LA.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/darvin-ham">Ham</a> has been the third head coach James worked with since joining the purple and gold in 2018. His first boss in Los Angeles was Luke Walton, who was already in California when The King signed for the storied franchise.



Walton had been at the helm of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers">Lakers</a> since 2016, but lost the job after failing to make the playoffs in LeBron’s first year with the team. In 2019, the organization handed the reins to Frank Vogel.



This hire turned out to help <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james">James</a> win his first and so far only NBA championship with the purple and gold, as the Lakers emerged victorious in the 2020 Orlando bubble under Vogel’s watch.

<h2>Lakers hired Ham aiming to help LeBron, but it didn’t work</h2>



In the wake of Vogel’s firing, the Lakers turned to Ham in the summer of 2022 hoping to maximize their championship window with LeBron and Anthony Davis before it was too late.



Having previously served as an assistant for the Milwaukee Bucks, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba/lakers-fire-head-coach-darvin-ham-what-was-his-contract-in-los-angeles">Ham signed a four-year deal with the Lakers</a> on a reported $5 million-a-year salary, aiming to take the franchise back to the top.



Following a weak start to the season, the moves made by Rob Pelinka at the February trade deadline saw the Lakers have an impressive resurgence in the second half of the season to make the playoffs.



Ham’s team went on to have a deep run, making it all the way to the Conference Finals. However, a sweep by the Nuggets handed LA a reality check, one that the rookie HC couldn’t leave behind in his second year.
