It’s not usual to see winning <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> teams making in-season coaching changes. But the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Lakers</a> are far from a winning team, and while they managed to stop the bleeding by beating the Los Angeles Clippers, they simply don’t look good right now.



There have been multiple reports about an alleged disconnect between the players and coach Darvin Ham. Ham called out the fans for their lack of patience, even though we’ve almost reached the midpoint of the season.



It’s not unusual to see <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LeBron James </a>lose his cool with his coaches and lose his confidence in them. Not many people have managed to stay in charge of James’ teams for more than a couple of years throughout the course of his career.

<h2>3. Mike D’Antoni</h2>



Mike D’Antoni will always be a candidate whenever a head coaching job becomes available. He’s too experienced to be sitting on a bench as an assistant coach, and we all know he’s one of the best offensive minds in the game.



This team could definitely use some offensive uptick and spark. They’re too stagnant on half-court sets, and their offense goes dry way too often, especially from beyond the arc. Their defense could be a concern, though.



<h2>2. Doc Rivers</h2>



Doc Rivers didn’t get another chance to coach, which is not much of a surprise if you consider how many leads he’s blown in the playoffs. But he still has an NBA championship pedigree and plenty of experience developing culture.



This team lacks accountability, and that’s not going to be an issue with Doc. He’s a respected guy in the league and a ‘player’s coach.’ His rotations could test the fans’ patience, but he’s a proven winner, at least in the regular season.

Phil Handy has plenty of experience with two things: The Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James. He’s been a lifelong assistant and clearly has LeBron’s confidence and ear, and that should not be overlooked when pursuing a new coach.



He’s been waiting for his turn for quite a while, and some believe he actually has a stronger presence and voice in the locker room than Ham, so even though he has never run the show, he could be his logical successor.

Ever since winning the In-Season Tournament, they’ve crumbled to pieces and can’t seem to get a stop against anybody.



They’re now two games below .500 and look more like a Play-In Tournament team than like an actual <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> championship contender. And to make things worse, it seems like the players are no longer committed to the coach.



Darvin Ham keeps getting exposed night in and night out, and<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> LeBron James</a> has been quite frustrated about it. Even at full strength, his rotations have always been questionable, and it seems like the second-year coach is just way over his head right now.

That’s why it’s not much of a surprise to see Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin reporting that their Sunday matchup vs. the Los Angeles Clippers could be crucial for his future in the organization:

“I’ve spent tonight asking around and this is the general consensus I’ve gotten: Sunday is crucial for Ham,” Irwin wrote on Twitter. “Considering how things have gone recently against the Clippers and how well they’ve been playing, there are plenty of people battening the hatches for a tumultuous weekend.”



Irwin did admit that he doesn’t expect Ham to be fired midseason, but it would be almost impossible to appease the fans with another blowout loss, especially to their city rivals:



“I’d still be pretty surprised if Ham was fired midseason, let alone this weekend, but between how the locker room feels about him, recent results, and his own comments, things feel pretty damn dire,” Irwin continued. “A blowout Sunday with more showers of boos would be impossible for the FO/ownership to ignore.“



<h2>Ham Calls Out The Fans</h2>



Ham recently tried to downplay all the rumors about his job being in jeopardy, and he even went as far as to call out the fans for complaining after every loss this season:

“It is what it is, it is the NBA,” said Ham after the loss. “It is a marathon. You have to look at the totality of the picture. I’m tired of the people living and dying with every single game we play. It’s ludicrous, actually.”



Ham wants the fans to be patient, and while he acknowledges that the team is going through a rough patch right now, it’s not like they haven’t played well this season.



“Come on, man, this is a marathon, and we’ve hit a tough stretch. It’s the same team that we play some high-level games a little while ago, and we just got to get back to that. We got to keep the fight thought. We cannot lose our fight,” Ham added.



Then again, it’s the Los Angeles Lakers we’re talking about, and there’s no such thing as moral victories or patience there, especially when you have two of the best players in the league on your team.

Even in the wins, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Lakers</a> have been far from impressive to start the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> season. It has taken some major heroics from <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LeBron James</a> to their 3-3 record, with all three wins coming by five points or left. Needless to say, banking all hopes on a soon-to-be 39-year-old player doesn’t sound like the wisest idea.



The Lakers have been middle-of-the-pack in most stats this season; hence, it’s not much of a surprise to see them being a .500 team. They’re 16th in points per game (111.8), 15th in field goal percentage (46.7%), and 14th in rebounds per game (45.0).



Nonetheless, they’ve had some serious issues matching other team’s intensity on the glass. That was on full display in their latest loss to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/orlando-magic" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Orlando Magic</a>, as they were outrebounded 51 to 40 (19 to 10 on the offensive glass), which led to 36 second-chance points. Needless to say, coach Darvin Ham was far from happy with that:



“You can’t scheme rebounding,” Ham told the media when asked about the team’s rebounding issues and his game-planning. “You gotta wanna get the damn ball, plain and simple. There’s no play I can draw up to get more rebounds. There’s no play I can draw up to have more guys there.”

<h2>LeBron James Talks About The Team’s Struggles</h2>



James has been as efficient as usual to start the season. He was supposed to be under a minute restriction and play 28-30 minutes a night. However, he’s currently averaging almost 36 minutes per game, although that might be due to the team’s struggles when he’s not on the floor.



When asked about the team’s struggles, James also showed his concerns about the team’s lack of intensity on the glass and how careless they’ve been with the basketball at times, going as far as to compare the team with the Pittsburgh Steelers:

“We got to try to figure it out because it’s definitely been a trend,” said James, per CBS Sports. “Offensive rebounds and points off turnovers. We’re like the Pittsburgh Steelers right now,” James continued. “The Pittsburgh Steelers right now have not out-gained or out-scored any of their opponents in this season right now, and yet they’ve got a winning record.”



<h2>The Role Players Need To Step Up</h2>



The Pittsburgh Steelers are, indeed, a good comparison for this ball team. They have a couple of superstars like LeBron James and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/anthony-davis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anthony Davis, </a>who would be like T.J. Watt and Cam Heywardd. The rest of the supporting cast, however, has been less than impressive thus far.

D’Angelo Russell is averaging 18 points per game, but he’s taking wild shots, hence the 42% shooting. Austin Reaves was expected to take another leap in his development, yet he’s averaging 12.5 points per game and has regressed in almost every category.



There’s no reason the Lakers should be so overmatched on the glass. The offseason acquisitions of Jaxson Hayes and Christian Wood were supposed to give them two strong presences in the restricted area and take some pressure off Anthony Davis. Instead, they’re allowing too many second-chance points and other teams to push the tempo and run on them after every defensive rebound.

Even so, it seems like coach Ham has failed to figure out the best way to use their backup big men and stagger their minutes. Davis has been up to the task with 26 points and 13 rebounds per game, but he can only do so much when everybody else isn’t boxing out. It’s still early in the season, but this team doesn’t seem like a good fit altogether.

Instead of talking about his team’s blowout win or their ring and banner ceremony, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LeBron James</a> has been the biggest talking point in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> for two days straight.



Having him on the floor for just 29 minutes was odd enough, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/darvin-ham" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Darvin Ham’s</a> admission of that being the plan for the remainder of the season sounded off the alarms around the fan base.



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Lakers</a> need someone to step up if LeBron is going to be limited to 28-30 minutes a night. That’s almost 10 minutes less than his career average, and his teams haven’t fared well when he’s on the bench.



Moreover, it’s not like LeBron was happy or even on board with that plan, either. In a now-viral video shared on Twitter, James voiced his frustration about not being able to be on the floor.

“Y’all know I can play point guard as well, right?” Bron said. “We got a lot left; I can play the point with Rui [Hachimura] in there, or Austin [Reaves] and T.P. [Taurean Prince] at the two and three. I’m just out there floating around.”



His coach still stood by the coaching staff’s plan and kept James on the bench as his team tried to make a push to get back at the Nuggets. That wasn’t the case, and they dropped yet another game to Nikola Jokic and company.



<h2>James Claims To Be On Board</h2>



Following the loss, James talked about Ham’s plan, and while he was clearly frustrated because he felt like he could contribute, he claimed that he was going to follow the system:



“I always want to be on the floor,”&nbsp;LeBron said.&nbsp;“Especially if you’ve got an opportunity to win the game or you feel like you can make an impact.&nbsp;But, I guess there’s a system in place, and I’ll follow it.”

Notably, that’s far from what he said a couple of years ago. He’s never been a fan of load management, and he once said that narrative of him needing to take a breather as he got older was an overreaction:



“I think this whole narrative of ‘LeBron needs more rest,’ or I should take more rest, or I should take time here, it’s become a lot bigger than what it actually is,” James told the media in 2021, “I’ve never talked about it, I don’t talk about it, I don’t believe in it. We all need more rest. I don’t play the game thinking about injuries. And I also feel worse when I play low minutes.”









An unhappy LeBron James usually means bad news for coaches. He’s got a long list of fired coaches in his résumé, and while his relationship with Darvin Ham seems to be great, we all know how quickly things can change in the league. For now, the Lakers will need Anthony Davis to carry the load and the supporting cast to chip in as well.

That’s standard for modern-day stars and the 15th-highest in league history, but not by a wide margin. 



Only Elgin Baylor (40.03), Allen Iverson (41.12), Oscar Robertson (42.20), Bill Russell (42.29), and Wilt Chamberlain (45.80) averaged over 40 minutes a night, and neither of them cracked the top 10 in total career games — unlike LeBron, who ranks 10th with 1,422.



Durability has never been an issue for James, who missed a grand total of 71 games in his first 15 seasons in the league, especially considering the fact that he made it to the NBA Finals eight years in a row. However, he’s about to turn 39 years old, and he’s missed 98 games in the past five seasons alone.



That’s why James was on the floor for just 29 minutes in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Lakers‘</a> season-opening loss to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/denver-nuggets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Denver Nuggets.</a> Moreover, coach Darvin Ham confirmed that’s not likely to change as the season progresses.

“We’ll see,” the second-year coach said after the game when asked about James’ low minutes becoming a season-long trend. “In all likelihood, yes.”



It’s also worth noting that the game was out of reach late in the fourth quarter, so it made no sense to risk their superstar for a lost cause. Still, there were key stretches of the game when James would’ve usually been on the floor, but not last night.



Of course, this could also be a fluid situation. James has defied Father Time for way too long already, and while he’s not a young player anymore, he’s also shown unprecedented durability and longevity, and doesn’t take as long as other players to nurse injuries.

“I always want to be on the floor,” LeBron told the media postgame. “Especially if you’ve got an opportunity to win the game or you feel like you can make an impact. But, I guess there’s a system in place, and I’ll follow it.”

All things considered, this is already a successful season for this team after the way they started off the year. Even so, it’s always NBA championship or bust when you play for the Purple and Gold, and there’s still work to be done.

“You know Dray, he’s gonna do his work early,” Coach Ham said. “There’s a reason why he’s a perennial All-Defensive player. He’s gonna force tough catches, his on-ball activity is second to none and he’s a good communicator.”
“If A’s not trying to go at him, we’re going into a secondary action after getting the ball to A;he’s great at that when he has to switch, talk his guy through the scenario,” Ham explained.“He’s been top-shelf his entire career in that regard.”
“We gotta go back and look at ways we can move A around, put him in different spacing, different actions, and diversify his attack,” the coach concluded.

Ham has made some thorough adjustments throughout the playoffs, so he’s most definitely going to find a way to get his star PF some better looks. That’s the only way they could have an edge over the reigning champions.
This coaching battle will be an interesting chess match. Steve Kerr always seems to have an ace up his sleeve, and Green has been a consistent defender throughout his entire career. Davis, on the other hand, can’t seem to string good games together.
