In the wake of a first-round exit in the 2024 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba">NBA</a> playoffs, Darvin Ham seems to be on the hot seat at the Los Angeles Lakers. And it looks like the team has already made a decision about the head coach.



According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, the purple and gold are planning to fire <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/darvin-ham">Ham</a>, with the decision expected to be made by the end of this week to start looking at potential candidates.



“The latest I’ve heard is the plan is still to move on from Darvin at some point, likely by the end of the week, potentially as early as tomorrow. Then, the head coaching search will start,” Buha said on The Athletic NBA Show podcast, via Silver Screen and Roll. 



Hired in 2022, Ham still has two more years under contract with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers">Lakers</a>. In his first year at the job he led the team to the Western Conference Finals after a rollercoaster regular season. Los Angeles once again lacked consistency in the 2023-24, but its playoff journey ended sooner this time.

“Already started to hear some names from different people,” Buha said on possible coaching targets for the Lakers, but clarified he’s “not going to comment on it yet until the Darvin situation is finalized. But, from what I’ve heard the last couple days, the plan is to still move on from Darvin.”

“During the 13-game skid, the Lakers used six starting lineups, including two variations of an all-wing lineup — James, Davis, Taurean Prince, Vanderbilt and either Cam Reddish or Hachimura — for five games (the team went 2-3). The decision to bench both Reaves and Russell, the team’s consensus third- and fourth-best players, did not sit well with many within the organization and locker room, according to team and league sources.“



The purple and gold went through a rough patch between December and January, which is why Ham tried different lineups that included benching Reaves and Russell. The team, however, only took off when they were back in the starting five, and the franchise reportedly felt it lost time by playing some games with them on the bench.

Then, injuries or not, he couldn’t find a starting lineup in the first 40+ games, and there were countless rumors about his continuity with the organization. Now, with a first-round exit in his resumé, a report by The Athletic states that his days in Los Angeles are most likely over.

This is far from a surprise. Ham looked over his head more often than not, and his players constantly snubbed his instructions. Even LeBron James cussed him after deciding not to challenge a call in Game 4:



“During a home game on Feb. 28, the Lakers players took matters into their own hands, bypassing Darvin Ham’s huddles and opting for player-led play calls,” added The Athletic. “While it showed locker room unity, it also hinted at a lack of trust in the coaching staff.”

Pressure is mounting on the team to make a coaching change as its first move to come back stronger, but the front office may not have that in consideration.



According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/darvin-ham">Ham</a> will probably continue at the helm of the Purple and Gold regardless of the results or the outside pressure because the team is not expected to break the bank for another coach.



“Here’s what the Lakers will have to look at: What is the marketplace; who is available out there? Mike Budenholzer is the most accomplished coach that’s available. The Lakers have not shown necessarily a willingness to pay for a head coach of what Budenholzer is going to command on the market,” Woj said. “Is it fair for Darvin Ham to lose his job? If they get swept, if they lose in five, it is part of the conversation the Lakers are going to have.”

Since the expectations have been that he could find a way to succeed with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james">LeBron James</a> and Anthony Davis on the roster, Ham’s work has been under scrutiny and the team’s inconsistency in his second year only put him in a hotter seat. The coach, however, feels he has the bosses’ trust.



“Nah, it comes with the territory,” Ham said in January when asked how he reacts to rumors about his job security. “My governor, Jeanie Buss, the boss lady, our president, Robert Pelinka, we’re all aligned. As long as they’re not saying it, I guess I’m good. I know how they feel about me in the situation we’re currently in. We’re all on the same page. My two captains, I communicate with them. Our communication has been at a high level.”

That’s why Anthony Davis didn’t hold back after their loss in Game 2. He didn’t seem to be too pleased with Darvin Ham’s coaching, stating that the team is all over the place at crucial times:



“We’ve shown that we’re more than capable,” said the former first-overall pick. “We have stretches where we don’t know what we’re doing on both ends of the floor.”

Unsurprisingly, the Lakers’ coach didn’t exactly agree with his star player. If anything, he thinks Davis was talking out of frustration, adding that they’re actually very organized:

“I just think sometimes plays don’t turn out the way you think they should,” Ham told the media. “The frustration sets in a little bit. But I don’t think it’s, for us, not being organized.”



Ham then talked about how his coaching staff takes pride in their efficiency and preparation. He thinks Davis talked in the heat of the moment and let emotions get the best of him:



“I think I have incredibly talented coaches all along my staff and we pride ourselves on, whether it’s a practice or shootaround, games, whatever, we pride ourselves on being highly efficient organization,” Ham said. “So I would just chalk that up to being frustrated, you know it’s an emotional game the way it ended and all of that. But I’ll agree to disagree on that one.”



At the end of the day, both deserve some blame. Davis only took one shot in the fourth quarter, and any star player would’ve demanded the ball down the stretch in a game like that.

Of course, there should be no shame in not being able to stop the best player in the game. To be fair, no one seems to know what to do about him. However, perhaps going on the record to say it won’t be good for team morale:



“You just got to go out there and try to be as disciplined as possible, aggressive and consistent, and have a next-play mentality, man,” Ham added. “You can’t get disappointed, you can’t get discouraged. Kid’s a generational type player and so you just got to keep swinging, keep bobbing, weaving, and swinging.”

That seems to be the case with Darvin Ham and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Lakers</a>.



Ham has failed to get a single win over the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/denver-nuggets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Denver Nuggets</a> in their last nine matchups, dating back to last season’s Western Conference Finals. Mike Malone keeps coaching circles around him, coming back from big deficits over and over.



Needless to say, a lot of that has had to do with Nikola Jokic’s dominance. And while no one should be to blame for struggling against the best player in the world, Ham recently set a new low for an all-time terrible excuse.



<h2>Darvin Ham Claims The Lakers Have More Adjustments For Nikola Jokic</h2>



Following their loss in Game 1, the Lakers’ second-year coach claimed that his team still had more adjustments to defend Jokic, but they didn’t want to use them all in Game 1:

“Darvin Ham says the Lakers have a couple more adjustments they’re going to throw at Nikola Jokic. He added the Lakers didn’t want to use all of their adjustments in Game 1,” Jovan Buha reported.



That seems like a bold strategy. Instead of getting a win on the road and stealing homecourt advantage, he chose to let their lead slip and save an adjustment for, say, next season.



<h2>LeBron James Wants Them To Pay Attention To Detail</h2>



There have been multiple reports and instances in which LeBron James has blatantly ignored Darvin Ham’s instructions. Now, he put his coach on notice by urging him and his team to pay attention to detail:



“I’ve never played on a championship team that didn’t pay attention to detail,” the four-time NBA champion said. “There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it. You have to.”

All things considered, Darvin Ham was a bit of an odd choice for the Lakers to begin with. They replaced a championship-winning coach with a lifelong assistant to coach LeBron James, and the results have been far from surprising.

It took him more than half a season to find a steady starting lineup that worked.



He was rumored to be on the hot seat midway through the season, but he wound up holding onto his job. Nonetheless, a report by Ashish Mathur of Hoops Wire reveals that even his own players wanted him to get fired and replaced by assistant coach Phil Handy.



<h2>Lakers Players Are ‘Irked’ By Darvin Ham </h2>



“A source told Hoops Wire that Lakers players wanted assistant coach Phil Handy to replace Ham earlier in the season. However, Los Angeles owner Jeanie Buss is a fan of Ham and she has never thought about firing him as coach,” read the report.

Handy and LeBron go back to their days with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and he’s always had a strong voice in the Lakers’ locker room. So, even if he doesn’t have any previous head coaching experience, James would’ve listened to him, unlike what has happened with Ham:



“Handy won the 2016 championship with LeBron on the Cleveland Cavaliers. LeBron, arguably the greatest player in NBA history, has ignored Ham in many huddles this season and communicated with Handy instead on what the Lakers should run,” added Mathur.

He’s currently vital to his team’s aspirations, but things weren’t always like that, as he was rumored to be on the trading block multiple times.



Recently, Russell even claimed that former teammate Dennis Schroder didn’t allow him to have a good relationship with coach Darvin Ham, which is why he was often benched in key stretches.



<h2>Darvin Ham Responds To Russell’s Comments</h2>



Notably, Ham didn’t shy away from those comments. He claimed that building relationships is tough, and that things won’t always march as smoothly as people expect:

“It doesn’t hit the ground running all the time smooth. Trying to figure things out on the fly. And yeah, Dennis is someone I love and care about. Dennis is a helluva player. But just trying to learn ‘Lo on the fly and figure things out,” said Ham.



The second-year coach also stated that his relationship with Russell is currently in a great place, but he admitted that they can bump heads every now and then because of their desire to win:



“Then, for him, the beautiful thing about it I think that caused the difference in where we were then and where we are now is our ability to talk and be honest with one another. And our ability to really take accountability with one another,” continued Ham. “It’s two grown men both caring about winning. Both trying to help one another figure this thing out. And who both want to get to the level we know we can get to. But in terms of he and I, I think we’re in a great place right now. I’m sure he would agree.”

Ham’s Lakers got off to a dreadful start to his first season. GM Rob Pelinka worked his magic midway through the campaign, and they got into a nice run to close out the year with a trip to the Western Conference Finals.



However, ever since, Ham has been outcoached almost every time he’s had to face a good team. That’s why the team could decide to let him go if they don’t make the playoffs, according to Lakers insider Anthony Irwin.



<h2>Playoff Failure Could Lead To Darvin Ham’s Exit</h2>



“Per sources speaking on the condition of anonymity, Ham’s job is still very much safe this season, but if the Lakers don’t make the playoffs (meaning, secure the sixth seed or win their way into an actual playoff series), that could change as soon as this summer,” reported Irwin. “Rob Pelinka’s focus is still squarely on this season, sources say, and conversations about Ham’s future have yet to truly commence.”

The report also pointed out how mediocre the Lakers have been under Ham’s tutelage, and that’s despite having one of the most talented and dominant duos in the league:



“On Ham’s watch, the Lakers, despite having a healthy LeBron James and Anthony Davis for the vast majority of the season, have been mostly mediocre,” Irwin added. “They’ve never been more than five games above .500 and currently sit ninth in the Western Conference with a 33-28 record. Yes, they’ve dealt with some injuries to other guys, but by and large, this season has felt like one giant missed opportunity.”

Even so, James wasn’t satisfied with the way their loss vs. the Phoenix Suns was officiated. The Lakers only went to the line eight times en route to a double-digit setback.



James claimed that people are quick to call out the Lakers over their free throw differential, stating that this should prove that they don’t get any help from the referees. Notably, his coach, Darvin Ham, echoed the same sentiment.

The coach also said the team is looking to take advantage of their playing style to get an edge in the free-throw line, so it’s been tough for them to adjust to the referees:



“That’s something we focus on, trying to win the free throw line every game. And so that’s tough,” Ham said. “I’m telling my guys to drive downhill; we’re trying to love and live in the paint. And you’re not getting calls. I see guys with their hands in our guys’ ribs or swinging, swiping at their heads, trying to block the shot but not getting the ball, but getting a piece of the body. And it’s not being called, as simple as that. So, we have to figure out ways to not let that be a problem, but it’s tough. Again, it’s frustrating when there’s so much inconsistency.”

Whatever the case, the refs have given the Lakers a helping hand a little too often, and that free-throw differential is just massive, so perhaps the officials will look to adjust from now forward.

LeBron had already claimed that he wouldn’t ‘play fantasy basketball’ and talk about potential trades out or respect for his teammates. That would be a first, but it’s never too late to learn.

The Lakers have struggled with injuries, and that has been the major issue. They’ve proven to be a solid outfit when they’re at full strength, so perhaps the King wants this team to run it back with the core they have instead of making big moves.

It’s tough to take a look at this<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Los Angeles Lakers</a> team and think they’re the same team that made it to the Western Conference Finals last season. Then again, that’s just how fast things can change in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA.</a>



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/darvin-ham" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Darvin Ham’s </a>team has looked overwhelmed and out of sorts at times this season. Injuries have prevented them from making the most of their depth, but even at full strength, they’ve been inconsistent.



Notably, D’Angelo Russell has been one of those inconsistent and often-hurt players. And when asked about his team’s situation, he didn’t exactly sound satisfied.



<h2>D’Angelo Russell Says Lakers Have ‘Holes’ In Their System</h2>



While he acknowledged that injuries have obviously taken a toll on this team’s ability to be at their best, he may have taken a subtle jab at his coach, stating that the team has yet to figure out some holes in their system:

“I think it’s just a lot of holes in our system right now,” Russell told The Athletic. “You use the regular season to figure those things out, the ups and downs, the digression, the setbacks, all these things. Injuries just keep playing a part in our success.”



Even so, the former No. 2 pick isn’t ready to hit the panic button just yet. He knows it’s a marathon, not a race, and they were able to turn things around in the second half of last season:



“I think we’re team that’s still trying to figure things out,” Russell said. “We’re still mixing and matching lineups, finishing groups, starting groups. So, we’re still figuring it out. So, I wouldn’t say panic, or anything like that. Last year was a prime example of this team not being where they wanted to be and we had some new energy, new vibes and it kind of made– it got us to where we ended off last year.”

Even so, the fans are starting to lose their patience, and with all the rumors and rumblings about Ham’s job security, they won’t have that much time to turn things around before they’re forced to make some big changes.

Roster-wise, chemistry-wise, and basketball-wise, they’re just not good enough to compete for an NBA championship right now, not even with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LeBron James</a> and Anthony Davis playing at a high level. Then again, not everything is lost.



Darvin Ham’s team has shown glimpses of great play when healthy and locked in, but those are two things that haven’t happened very often. No one can be blamed for injuries, but the coach should be held accountable for not having his team ready to perform night in and night out.



That’s why it wasn’t surprising to see the reports of an alleged disconnect between the locker room and their coach. Fortunately for them, Ham decided to face the criticism face-first, holding an ‘unfiltered film session’ to hear the players’ feedback.



<h2>Darvin Ham Hosts ‘Unfiltered Film Session’</h2>



“‘Hell yeah I open the floor,’” Ham told The Athletic. “‘Give me some feedback. I don’t have pride. My pride is not crazy. My ego — all that. We had a couple (players) speak up. I’ll just leave it there, but we had a few guys speak up. And right or wrong, I love it. I agreed with most of it, and I disagreed with some.’”

The Lakers have dropped multiple games they were supposed to win because of sloppy play and an inability to come back from behind. Ham’s adjustments have come too late or not at all, and you can tell the players are frustrated with the way they’re being coached.

This is pretty much the same team that made it to the Western Conference Finals last season, but they may have peaked already. Whatever the case, it’s up to the coach to find some answers, and props to him for listening to his players and keeping an open door.
