The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">NCAAF</a> season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers definitely fell short of expectations within the program. At the start of the season, Matt Rhule faced a quarterback dilemma between Dylan Raiola and Heinrich Haarberg, ultimately choosing Raiola. However, for the crucial Bowl game against Boston College, the HC has not ruled out Haarberg playing.


 


Since the coach ultimately decided to trust <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/dylan-raiola">Raiola</a> as his starting quarterback throughout the season, Haarberg transitioned to the offensive line, taking on the role of Tight End.



Despite this unusual situation where the coach decided to change roles for some of his players, Rhule himself assured that, if necessary, Haarberg would be able to return to his natural position.



“He’ll still be available as a quarterback in the bowl game,” Matt Rhule said. “But Jalyn [Gramstad] has been working as the number two quarterback and Heinrich’s been pretty much full steam ahead getting ready for next year and sort of being that F-Y tight end type guy.”

The Big Ten schedule has not been gentle with the Huskers who currently hold a four-game losing streak. However, quarterback Dylan Raiola hasn’t lost faith and issued a bold promise to head coach Matt Rhule and rest of the team.



Back in October 5, Nebraska boasted a 5-1 record. The team was one win away from securing bowl eligibility, with goals that extended beyond that– some even dreamed of a Big Ten Championship berth. Fast forward to today, and the Huskers have not secured a bowl appearance.



Nebraska has lost in its last four outings and are down to the last two games of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season to win a bowl-clinching game. So much has changed for the Huskers. Dylan Raiola had a great start and has hit a horrid slump. Since October, Raiola has thrown two touchdown passes and eight interceptions.

“We’ll get the win next week and get us to a bowl,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/dylan-raiola">Raiola</a> stated. “I spent all bye week with (Holgorsen) and then obviously the game week. It’s important knowing what he’s gonna call and what he likes here and why he’s calling it so we can execute at the best of our ability. It’s been a tale of two halves for Rhule and the Huskers. They kickstarted the season with flying colors, bursting out of the gate. However, ranked opponents have proven to be this team’s kryptonite, hampering the Huskers’ chances of making the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">College Football</a> Playoffs.

“We have to show progress. And the reality is, we were building this team from the very beginning. I kept telling them, Hey guys, we’re building this for November and December. You know, we’re trying to work hard in the offseason to get you guys to this moment. Here we are.“

Dylan Raiola has struggled as of late. His promising start looks well behind in the rear-view mirror. Over the last four games, Raiola has thrown six interceptions to only one touchdown. It’s gotten out of hand for the Cornhuskers and even Rhule has set his sights on getting the year over with and look ahead into 2025.



“We’re obviously all frustrated about the last three games but we have a bye week, we have to go play,” Rhule said. “So we’ll see how we stand against USC. We’ll see obviously and against Wisconsin we’ll see how we stand with Iowa. But yeah, we’ll have a lot of good players next year here.”

“I thought our defense was dominant all day, save three plays. Take away three plays. … We tackled well. We handled the run. In addition to analyzing his team’s performance, Matt Rhule was forthright in his assessment of their opponent, the Ohio State Buckeyes: “They have a great run game. They’ve got great players, got a great coach,” Rhule stated. “I think our players just played really well, played physical, played hard, got off blocks. We didn’t do anything special today.”

With successful tenures at programs like Baylor and Temple, HC Matt Rhule is working week by week to take <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nebraska">Nebraska</a> as far as possible in this NCAAF season, and so far, he is delivering on that promise. Regarding this situation, the coach himself spoke out.



“We expected to come here and win the football game. We expected to win. … I was proud of that football team today. I was proud. They didn’t back down,” Rhule stated. “It was the first time since I’ve been here that I felt a championship mindset in the locker room. Along with a championship mindset, as those who compete know, comes utter disappointment when you lose.”

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/matt-rhule">Matt Rhule</a> and Nebraska were forced to face a crushing defeat in Week 8 of the 2024 NCAAF season, losing 56-7 to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/indiana">Indiana</a>. Although the game was on the road, it was no less painful. After the blowout, the Cornhuskers’ head coach made a surprising admission and even apologized to the fans.



In his post-game press conference, Matt Rhule admitted that he didn’t see the big outcome coming, much less losing by nearly 50 points against Indiana Hoosiers on the road.



“I’ll be honest with you guys—I didn’t see this coming. I thought we were going to play great,” Rhule said. He believed his team could have performed much better, but they managed just one touchdown in the second quarter.

One of the key moments in the press conference was when Rhule personally apologized to Nebraska fans, particularly those who traveled and spent money to witness the team’s tough loss.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers lost their unbeaten record at home after falling 31-24 to Illinois Fightin Illini in overtime. Dylan Raiola and company were unable to defeat Illinois and have now fell in the rankings. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/matt-rhule">Matt Rhule</a> did not hold back when addressing his team following the disappointing result after a promising start to their season.



The Cornhuskers had made waves all around <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/college-football">college football</a> after an imposing win over the Colorado Buffaloes. The team had build on it and improved their record to 3-0. As they looked to remain undefeated when hosting Illinois, the Huskers fell in dramatic fashion and questions have risen around the program. Rhule was categorical on his team’s performance evaluation.



“Hate that we’re still in the learning-how-to-win phase,” Rhule said, via Sports Illustrated. “It just felt really tight out there in the second half, except for some guys. Dylan [Raiola] doesn’t feel tight. He’s out there saying ‘let’s go play. I don’t think anything was good enough in that game.”



As <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nebraska">Nebraska</a> fell to Illinois, the Huskers let a great opportunity slip away. Quarterback Dylan Raiola threw for three touchdowns and an interception, however he was let down by some miscommunications errors on defense. Illinois tied the game at 24 in the fourth quarter on a 4th &amp; 2 that had an eligible lineman wide open in the endzone as the defense was bamboozled.

<h2>Dylan Raiola’s brother commits to Nebraska</h2>



The Raiola family legacy continues in Nebraska. Dayton Raiola who is member of the 2026 recruiting class has committed to the Huskers. The quarterback recruit is Dylan’s brother and looks to add on to the historic link between his family and Nebraska.



The young quarterbacks’ father Dominic Raiola was an <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> All-American center at the university and played over 200 games with the Detroit Lions. Dayton and Dylan’s uncle, Donovan, is currently the Huskers offensive line coach.



“I feel like I would be making a mistake if I didn’t go to Nebraska. On top of my brother and uncle being there, my sister works in recruiting there now, and my dad was an All-American there. The coaching staff at Nebraska really has shown me real love and I can feel it every time I go up there.”

He’s been in a tough situation given the Carolina Panthers’ struggles to find a franchise QB, and Christian McCaffrey’s health hasn’t done much to help. Still,Matt Rhule has failed to silence his doubters.

Kliff Kingsbury’s shortcomings in the second half of the season have become a worrisome trend, and it’s been like that since his days in college. He’s a great offensive mind, but he’s failed to make timely adjustments when his team has needed him the most.
The Arizona Cardinals enter a make-or-break season after spending a lot of money on Kyler Murray. They need to prove that they can keep up with contenders after putting together an offensive juggernaut of a team. Otherwise,Kingsbury can close the door on his way out.

Mike McCarthy wouldn’t even have a job if it wasn’t for that Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers. But the game has changed, the league has changed, and the only thing that hasn’t changed is his mistakes.
