“I absolutely love Messi, love watching him play and that was the only reason because I think Messi had a little bit more in terms of how he played and taking players on and whatever. “I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don’t think he really understood football (soccer) that well,” Wayne Rooney said, via ESPN.com. “But what he does understand is, he’s a hard worker, we know that.”

“In my view, Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona is the greatest team of all time,” Rooney declared, a statement that carries weight, considering the Barcelona side in question was a fierce rival to his own Manchester United during their peak years.



Rooney’s admiration for Guardiola’s Barcelona extends to the man who was the team’s linchpin—Lionel Messi. “Lionel Messi is the greatest player ever. What he does is incredible; he can do everything. “Ultimately, I didn’t know how else to deal with it, so I chose alcohol to try and help me get through that. There were people there for me to speak to, but I chose not to do that and tried to deal with it myself.

Wayne Rooney’s time in Major League Soccer can best be summed up as incomplete. As a player DC United began thriving with Rooney when he terminated his contract and returned to England. He’d score 25 goals in 52 games. As a manager he brought DC United back to relevancy after poor campaigns but left to return to England after DCU failed to qualify for the postseason in 2023.

Rooney has a 13-23-10 lifetime record with DC United and is 9-12-6 on the season. When asked by the Washington Post about his contract situation, Rooney admitted he was “disappointed” he has not been offered a new contact yet and that he “misses” his wife and children.

When referring to his family the former Everton striker stated, “Of course, you miss the kids and you miss your wife, but it’s been as good as it can be. I’ve been settled here. The family has been settled at home. It hasn’t been an issue at all.”
