Pete Alonso sends clear message on Mets facing Yankees in October

Pete Alonso, who’s been having a strong 2025 season with the New York Mets, recently addressed the possibility of facing the New York Yankees in a postseason matchup this October. His response was not only clear—it also came with a bit of humor.

“That’d probably be the best postseason matchup ever because you don’t have to go on the road. … You don’t have to deal with the great wall of traffic going out of JFK. You don’t have to wait on the tarmac. … Any chance we can avoid the Van Wyck, that’d be great.” That’s how Alonso described the idea of a postseason showdown with the Yankees.

Beyond the fact that Alonso emphasized both teams are from the same city, it’s worth remembering the last time the Mets and Yankees met in the postseason—it was nearly 25 years ago, in the 2000 World Series. The Yankees won that series at the Mets’ ballpark.

The Mets-Yankees postseason history

The Mets and Yankees have only met once in the postseason: the 2000 World Series. That series lasted five games, with the Bronx Bombers defeating the Mets 4-1. The games were played between October 21 and 26, and it remains a painful memory for the Mets and their fans.

But before thinking about October—or another shot at a World Series—the Mets have to prove they can win a MLB regular season series against the Yankees. So far in 2025, they’ve struggled. They dropped the first game of their initial matchup and barely pulled out a win in the second, with the series still ongoing.

Alonso has appeared in just 16 postseason games with the Mets so far. His first playoff run came in 2022, with his most recent in 2024—a year in which he set some personal career marks. That postseason included his first multi-home-run performance, and career highs in plate appearances (58), runs (10), hits (12), and RBIs (10). It remains his best postseason showing to date.
