After a rocky start to the NBA regular season, the Los Angeles Clippers found their rhythm with Kawhi Leonard back in the lineup. Since his return, the team has regained momentum in the playoff race. However, back-to-back losses to the Los Angeles Lakers have raised concerns among fans about certain players—particularly James Harden. Following Sunday’s matchup, Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue addressed the situation.

With Leonard leading the way against the Lakers, expectations were high for Harden, but his performance fell short. The former MVP managed just 13 points, eight assists, and two rebounds—well below his season averages. His struggles have fueled growing speculation among fans about his form and durability.

Looking to dispel concerns, Lue defended Harden and offered insight into his recent dip in performance. “You can see fatigue setting in with James Harden. He has carried the Clippers for 50 games,” Lue told reporters after the loss to the Lakers.

Lue acknowledged the demanding schedule but made it clear that Harden remains a key part of the team’s plans moving forward. “We’ve got to keep fighting through it because the schedule doesn’t get any easier,” he added, emphasizing that despite the heavy workload, the Clippers are not looking to sideline Harden in the challenges ahead.

Harden’s role in the regular season

Since joining the Clippers at the start of the season in October, Harden has had little time to rest. Apart from the All-Star break, he has missed just three games during the regular season. In the 57 games he has played, Harden has often had to take on a leadership role within the roster.

His heavy workload, spanning both the NBA Cup and the regular season, could be a factor in his recent struggles with the team. As he approaches his 36th birthday in 2025, Harden’s effort has been crucial, contributing to the Clippers’ 32-28 record this season.

With the playoffs approaching, Lue will need to carefully manage Harden’s minutes to ensure he remains fresh for the postseason push. With Kawhi Leonard now fully recovered and leading the team, the Clippers may look to strategically rest Harden in select matchups.

Lue’s take on Kawhi Leonard

As the Clippers consider leaning on Leonard’s leadership in games where Harden is rested, Lue shared his thoughts on the forward’s impact. “It’s been a process. I think over the last couple of games, you’re starting to see certain situations and plays where Kawhi is looking like himself again,” Lue said.

“Still, he’s working on getting into the rhythm and flow of the game. The pace was a bit fast for him early on, especially in those first 10 or 12 games. But it’s starting to come together. Until we get our full team healthy, it’s going to take some time. But I’m confident he’ll get back to his best,Lue added.
