When talking about one of the biggest surprises of the last NFL season, the Washington Commanders cannot be overlooked. Jayden Daniels had an excellent debut as a rookie, and the team hopes to build on that success alongside Dan Quinn and the rest of his teammates.

The current debate centers on what might happen with Terry McLaurin, one of the quarterback’s primary offensive weapons. The veteran wide receiver is not training alongside his teammates as he has yet to resolve his contract situation, leaving his availability uncertain moving forward.

As the first moves around the league begin to take shape, Dan Quinn spoke to the media and addressed the absence of one of the team’s key players.

“The good news is lots of rapport has been built. … Sometimes football and business, they intersect, and this is one of those times,” Commanders coach Dan Quinn said about McLaurin’s absence.

Jayden Daniels #5 of the Washington Commanders celebrates with Terry McLaurin #17 after defeating the Detroit Lions 45-31 in the NFC Divisional Playoff at Ford Field on January 18, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan.

Terry is a fantastic teammate and really puts in the work, and [we’ve] spent a lot of time with him already this offseason. The business side of things, (general manager) Adam (Peters) and their crew and Terry and his group, they’ll let them work through that. But in the meantime, lots of stuff to do.”

An offense looking to make an impact

The Commanders were one of the pleasant surprises of last NFL season, even pulling off a statement win at Ford Field against Detroit. Unfortunately for them, the Super Bowl was within reach — but ultimately slipped away.

To further strengthen an offense that made headlines last year, Washington added veteran Deebo Samuel to its roster. Samuel decided it was time for a change after his stint with the San Francisco 49ers and he’s expected to build strong chemistry with Daniels.

The franchise remains confident it can resolve McLaurin’s situation. If a contract extension is reached, he would further strengthen a unit that is already one of the most powerful in the NFC East.
